Republicans use this to drum up their base. When they talk about "coastal elites", it's a dog whistle for a lot of things. But it's very easy to make Midwest conservatives believe "they think you're stupid and what you like doesn't matter". Because for many white liberals, it's actually true.

They sat around thinking this while Trump won 2 times. And somehow they still believe there aren't that many people who want what he's selling.

Liberal people constantly underestimate the impact of conservative sentiment in this country. Republicans have understood this for a long time. The same way white people from the heartland think they are "the real America", white liberals think their culture is "the real culture".
