Guerra González, Antonio. Tzompantli. Mexico City: Taller Azul, Arte Útil, 2013. Accordion folded sheet with silkscreen images bound in leather with linoleum printed carving and clasps made of carved deer antler. “This book draws an analogy between the pre-Hispanic Tzompantli (skull rack) and the violence in Mexico of the recent past. It contains the names of the places with the highest rates of violence in Mexico, which are joined together to form a single, endless word. This word is a metaphor for the unity and strength of society; by acknowledging the violence and reading the word, it functions as a kind of mantra that helps heal the pain of the people.” Copy 3 of 10 signed by the artist. https://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/10084297.

Cegarra, Alejandro. Dos muros = Two walls. Manizales, Colombia: Raya Editorial, 2025 https://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/in00000881702. “Explores the journey of migration along Mexico's borders, emphasizing the barriers—physical, administrative, and psychological—that many face. Over eight years, I documented these stories, witnessing Mexico transform from a refuge into an extension of U.S. immigration policies. This book is a historical record of resistance, resilience, and identity—an ode to dignity and memory. Guerrero Murillo, Marcela and Edinson Montaño [et al]. Hebrando mis raíces[Weaving my roots] https://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/in00000290023. A tribute to Afro identity, history, and cultural resistance, narrated from the perspective of curly hair from an Afro-Colombian young woman. A reflection on displacement, memory, and the symbolic power of hair as a vehicle of resistance and pride. The book uses synthetic fiber to resemble curly hair and is designed to be read bottom up in just the same way as Afro hair grows up and up and up. It’s housed in a box, which has (three-dimensional) braided synthetic hair (Kanekalon) woven into a picture frame design, with a braided knob and hook that serve as a locking mechanism. Bound in printed paper wrappers with a wraparound tab to cover the page edges; pages are double-folded with fold at outer edge. Image: Adan Griego. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (1753-1811). He was a middle-class criollo (a Spaniard born in the New World). In 1803 he became head of the parish of Dolores in the present central state of Guanajuato. His intellectual and political curiosity led him to become involved in the tertulias, or literary societies familiar with Enlightenment ideas in early 19th century Mexico, which were to become precursors to the fight for independence. At one of those gatherings a conspiracy to rebel in December of 1810 was planned, but it had to be carried out on September 16, 1810 after the plot was uncovered.

Hidalgo’s fight for independence was short-lived. He fell in a royalist ambush and was defrocked, tried, and executed in the Northern city of Chihuahua in July of 1811. As an early martyr of Mexico’s fight for independence he is considered Padre de la Patria or Father of the Nation and is depicted as a heroic figure in this 1910 Independence Centennial music score.

José María Morelos y Pavón (1765-1815). He was born into a poor family and most likely had Indian and African blood on his mother's side. He was a student of Hidalgo and joined rebel forces shortly after the Grito de Dolores and assumed the insurgent leadership after the execution of Hidalgo.

In 1813 Morelos convened the Chilpancingo National Assembly where he proclaimed Mexico’s independent from Spain. He was captured in November of 1815 and executed a month later after facing a military court and an Inquisition trial.

He is depicted here in the 1943 movie poster as the heroic Rayo del sur or Southern Thunderbolt.

Cover from the Argentine labor magazine Ya es tiempo de pueblo! “Chile: the Start of the War” (September 13th). The image with the American flag clearly accuses the United States as a co-conspirator. Declassified government documents show the active role of the Nixon administration in overthrowing the Allende government. Circulating Collection. AP63. Y2 V.1 JUN.29,1973/JAN.24,1974

*Mexico’s government welcomed over 1,000 political Chilean exiles (and later those of other South American dictatorships). It’s no surprise that in 1978 the Revista de la Universidad de Mexico, a leading cultural publication, featured a special dossier on Chile. Among the contributors were Fernando Alegria (already teaching at Stanford) and a young playwright (Ariel Dorfman) that would later teach at Duke University. Both had been cultural advisors in Allende’s government. Circulating Collection 056.72 .U55

Shameful campaign to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, over 70 percent of whom are Hispanic or Latino, is rippling across college campuses — from an increased ICE presence to new limits on educational access.

I arrived in Santa Barbara around midnight July 28/1989. Room I had arranged to rent 3 weeks earlier wasn't ready. Conejo, landlord's dog, was sleeping where I should be! It was a cool evening & I ended up digging through my suitcase for something to keep me warm. But it was the beach & a real job.
