Have you noticed longer waits for your streetcar? While some streetcar routes are seeing recent improvements as part of the promised 6-minute service standard, slower service and unreversed service cuts on other routes have meant wait times have gone up + ridership down over the decade. I rode the 510 for the first time in a while (College to Spadina Stn). The phase rotation was working at College & Spadina, but a streetcar still missed the green because it had to preform a stop-check-slow for the grand union. If the switch control system allowed, it could go through green nonstop.

true. both are needed to provide faster streetcar service in Toronto.

Will this business case include looking at improving the existing electronic switch controls and reporting for single-blade switches to eliminate the stop-check-go for all common moves? That is a key question, because we don’t want to wait decades for a faster network. @fasttracktoronto.bsky.social

Baffling that they continue to install obsolete equipment that badly limits speed and thus reduces service levels and increases costs.

Even other very old systems like Milan (here shown running 100 year old trams) use double-point switches.

This procurement makes zero sense and harms the TTC.

With phase rotation, however, the left turn phase can either come before (leading) or after (lagging) depending on estimated streetcar arrivals.

This *significantly* reduces delays for transit riders!

With lagging left turns, the left turn phase follows the streetcar phase every cycle. This makes no difference to streetcar delay, and thus, minimal benefit to riders.

Phase rotation is starting to be installed at some signals in Toronto, and lagging left turns at others.

Can you spot the difference? 🧵

Wow.

This is exactly what needs to change if we want our streetcar system to be around for much longer.

Appalling, really. And it does belong in a museum…because we should have efficient and effective technology on display, not ancient.

Toronto…*we deserve better*

yes…streetcar lines need priority!!!

I'd like to know if Line 5 is getting the same TSP as Line 6, or the watered down version.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow confirms that enhanced signal priority is now being rolled out on Line 6 Finch West, with Line 5 Eglinton to follow soon. A huge step forward to maximizing the transit user experience on our new LRT lines!

If you get off the Crosstown LRT at the Aga Khan Museum stop and want to go to the actual museum, you have to play frogger across the Eglinton westbound exit ramp from the DVP.

i thought so bc you can tell that the other ramps are bumped out to leave space for it

The Eglinton LRT is critical rapid transit. Give it the full 30 second green extension of other streetcar lines @toronto.ca. And look into red truncation too (may be challenging given minimum pedestrian crossing times). Who cares about drivers waiting, transit must get priority.

eglinton crosstown should’ve had high-floor trains…like edmonton, etc.

we can still do this theoretically but it’s not happening anytime soon that’s for sure 😭

09.02.2026 21:13 👍 8 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

a 407 adjacent rail line (or similar idea) would get a lot of ridership i’m sure

Not enough doors. Tram vehicles can have more, but low floor is a hard limit. There is a reason high floor subways are used for lines like this. There is a reason we planned a high floor subway on this line decades ago . . .

The Line 5 launch went quite well in my personal opinion, and I'm going to have a detailed and I would say quite positive post on the line later today. But first I want to provide some things I really think should be fixed. The TTC to their credit was actually asking for this!

still lots of work to do!
