Translated, botched and butchered. Most translations absolutely butcher it and if you're not prepared to read the original text you should go read the Odyssey or something. If you're going to translate it, treat it like the actual work of art it is and stop making it fucking stupid.

But mostly! It's such a "classic" piece of ancient lit, but it's so simplistic and so divorced from its original cultural relevance that it's virtually unintelligible as to what the takeaway should be and it's been forced into this genre touch point for a culture it wasn't written for, poorly....

The ancient epic (we pretend the movie doesn't exist). First off, i read it very young in home school and when I later went to public school, no one believed me and they made me read it in middle school and AGAIN in highschool, where I was also forced to "draw my favorite scene" with crayons.
