exactly. like what even interested you about this story? what spoke to you? because we can’t tell! in both of the adaptations i mentioned there’s nothing interesting playing out on screen. might as well be michael bay transformers or, god forbid, both suicide squad adaptations

removing nuance and thematic threads that are present in the original work to ultimately dumb down and reduce a story to such frictionless and dull coworker/hype moment slop is not a question of being “faithful” it’s a question of competence

a lot of people keep trying to defend the pitfalls of HOUSE OF THE DRAGON (and funnily enough, WUTHERING HEIGHTS) by falling back on “adaptations don’t need to be faithful”. and that’s just the weakest, laziest, and quite frankly, arrogant, counterargument you could come up with

take your time. not everything needs to be upfront and in our faces in episode one or even season one. you run the risk of coming across as insincere otherwise. no one wants to slow burn these days. write for your audience like they are adults. we don’t need the tom taylor treatment

this is actually a very salient point. we love woke. we want woke. we need woke. what we don’t need is boring, pointed, obvious dialogue and story surrounding these ideas. my favorite recent example in dragon age veilguard—you know the scene. writers need to be subtler, and more thoughtful

reading wuthering heights and there’s just no way emerald fennell is capable or adapting this properly. there’s an urgent, sincere, throbbing emotion here. a panic. a malady that i don’t think she will be able to grasp. this isn’t a love story. it’s a ghost story
