Spring is in the air, Peregrine Falcons yesterday, Isle of Man

Sooty Grouse (Dendragapus fuliginosus) in mating display, showing off his breeding plumage with orange throat sacks and eye combs. His tail is fanned wide, and he stands among green grasses and herbs in a coniferous forest.

Here is a close-up of this obliging Sooty Grouse, with the warty skin at his throat looking more yellow, which is how it is described in the field guides.

I met this Sooty Grouse on the Sunrise side of Mount Rainier way back in July 2009. I was visiting my Flickr page looking for old photos yesterday and came across this fellow again.

I love that place! We saw an Agami Heron there in 2016 and Gartered Trogon in ‘25.

Indeed. An agami heron had been seen from one of the bridges three days before we arrived, and we checked that area first thing every morning, but we weren’t surprised to have no luck. Next time, I think we’ll go in their breeding season, when they’re much easier to see and prettier for photos.

Yes, we got a lot of good birds there too. We missed the agami, though. Gonna have to go back!
