There's a shitload of people out of work and a lot of important work to be done and it is madness-inducing how the overwhelming majority of our leaders don't care that those two problems can solve each other.
Does anyone out there have intel about the history + earliest uses of the French expressions "premier degré" = literal/face value and "second degré" = tongue in cheek/ironic/between the lines/etc? No French dictionaries I have access to here include historical info for those senses. #linguistics
