My parents-in-law are Bengali and canna *thole* spicy food.
They’re conscious that this is ‘unusual’.
Every time we eat at an Indian restaurant, they ask the waiter for “no chilli” and they always get chilli because the staff think they’re joking.

I’d be God-Emperor of Earth in a year with my magical ability to predict stock market fluctuations; but first (& most importantly) I’d be at the Tattiesheds throwing shapes to ‘Ecuador’ by Sash with a bottle of White Lightening and nae back pain

I’d cheerfully go £10m into debt to go back to 2001, assuming I got the body to go with it.

usually if you ask experts why an empire fell they’ll say it’s nuanced and multifaceted, so i think it’s kind of cool that with America future historians will get to just say like “oh they took the idiot train to moronsville”

It was a pretty popular policy at the time IIRC. And there’s a certain wisdom to “let’s see if anybody else gets buyer’s remorse”, given how important our food industry was & is.
That was near two decades ago, though, so it does bear revisiting.

these have been good years for medievalists, first wondering if the pope will excommunicate the emperor and now watching the king have his brother locked up

Posts from the Daily Record's Paul Hutcheon on X:
#1: 'That's the Scottish Labour "branch office" line dead and buried.'
#2: 'From the silence/public statements of Scottish Labour MPs, it's clear they see Keir Starmer, not Anas Sarwar, as their leader.'
Less than six hours between these posts.
Excellent journalism, Paul. Thank you.

And at a time when we had a *real* problem with ‘boat people’, funnily enough.

In the interests of clarity, I reckon he was the latest in a long tradition of Picts-as-they-reckoned-it and Dalriadans-as-they-reckoned-it.
I don’t think he would have been especially ‘exotic’ to either group. The Picts seem to have had a long tradition of not being v. fussed about who yer da was.
