Had an amazing time at the @ukhsa.bsky.social air quality research review meeting in Newcastle today! It was fascinating to learn more about air quality impacts on human health. I enjoyed discussing my poster, investigating interactions between net-zero aligned afforestation and air quality. 🌳☁️🌍

We've written a blog about our new paper! πŸ”ŽIf you want to find out about net-zero aligned afforestation in the UK and how this might impact future biogenic emissions in a warmer climate, check out the summary blog @leedsleaf.bsky.social🌳☁️🌍

Huge thank you to my supervisors @catzigle.bsky.social , Piers Forster and Steve Arnold, also to Ben Silver.

The findings demonstrate that the impact of net-zero aligned afforestation on BVOC emissions can be minimised through careful selection of tree species, which could help to avoid unintended consequences of afforestation on air quality.

This study focusses on tree species that make up the majority of existing UK woodland or are expected to play a key role in UK forests in the future and examines afforestation in a warmer climate with higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

In our greatest emission scenario we see an increase in emissions of BVOCs by up to 123% by 2050. However, in some of our experiments we observe a reduction in BVOCs by as much as 3%.

We model the emission of biogenic emissions from five afforestation experiments, based on an achievement of 19% average woodland cover in the UK by 2050, in a future warmer and drier climate. Woodland cover is currently around 13%.

Future forests: estimating biogenic emissions from net-zero aligned afforestation pathways in the UK Abstract. Woodlands sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which could help mitigate climate change. As part of efforts to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2050, the UK's Cli...

I’m really excited to say the first paper of my PhD has been published in Biogeociences today!

The paper examines the impact of net-zero aligned afforestation in the UK on biogenic emissions. 🌳 bg.copernicus.org/articles/22/...

I’ve had a blast at my first @big-stem-network.bsky.social meeting at the RI. Learning from a host of amazing people who dedicate their life to sharing the joy of science and make it as accessible as possible. From games and demos, to science TV shows and animal displays. #sciencecomms #naturecomms

Final day of #EGU25 tomorrow! I’ve really enjoyed my first EGU - hearing lots of #atmosphericscience and #biogeoscience talks (and giving my own!), as well as science to policy and science communication workshops too! Plus the #urbantrees in Vienna are great 🌳

Oooh thank you for the info! It is indeed quite shaded where i found it. I've never seen it so green before. Thanks

Tree friends 🌳 Near us is a bank of #LondonPlane trees, surrounded by what is essentially a ball pit of their leaves which seem to always be there(!). It makes me so happy. But today on my walk through those leaves, I noticed this zesty green #Lichen! Anybody know what type of lichen it is?
