Photograph of a page from Charles Darwin’s 1837 Notebook B showing the β€œTree of Life” sketch, which gives a glimpse of his early insights into how a set of multiple related species might originate by divergence from a single starting point. The bottom shows a common root with various branches and twigs emerging from different nodes, with labels from A to D. There is a handwritten annotation at the top, reading β€œI think”. Further handwritten annotations on the right-hand side of the image are thought to state the following. β€œCase must be that one generation then should be as many living as now. To do this and to have many species in same genus (as is) requires extinction.”

One of my favourite things about this figure (sketched by Charles Darwin in one of his notebooks in 1837) is the β€œI think” at the top. Beyond an illustration of his evolving thoughts on descent with modification, the image somehow captures the essence of scientific curiosity. #DarwinDay 2026

Convergence of machine learning and genomics for precision oncology Nature Reviews Cancer, Published online: 02 January 2026; doi:10.1038/s41568-025-00897-6In this Perspective, Reardon et al. explore how integrating machine learning into next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based molecular diagnostic workflows can enhance precision oncology. They discuss the benefits, challenges and responsible implementation of these approaches, highlighting their potential to streamline variant interpretation, maximize clinical insights and support more informed decision-making at the point-of-care.

FlyBase, a Drosophila database, will lose a third of its team in early October because the Harvard grant that covered the employees’ salaries was canceled. Scientists warn that losing FlyBase could devastate fly research.

Surprised to find only 21% of #BreastCancer in the UK is diagnosed via screening. The majority are diagnosed via symptoms and referral to '2 week clinic'. (Which I gather may be >2 weeks wait).

The figure in Australia is 46%. Shouldn't the UK invest more in earlier (asymptomatic) detection? πŸ€”
