Oh this will end well. Really is just a race to the bottom.

100 times, yes. All of this.
I made this exact point on LinkedIn. Scholars are a draw for students to universities, labs. They pay to learn under us and receive our expert advice. But universities aren't protecting most academics from direct attacks on their freedom or they don't have the funds, so I'm not holding my breath.
Yes, I am one of the academics who likeness is being misused and appropriated without my consent by Grammarly's expert review. Livid doesn't even begin to describe it. Lawyering up does. π‘π€

I am one of the folks also. I'm guessing the majority of us are. Have we found a class action attorney yet?
I once made the mistake of asking my students how many of them had seen E.T.

Anthropic filed suit against the Department of Defense on Monday after the agency labeled it a supply chain risk. The complaint calls the DOD's actions "unprecedented and unlawful."
All the internet and tech bros are hiding there. Why not the internet and tech scholars?
I'm creating a series of short form videos about how language models work technically. The goal is to be something in between "you know it's next token prediction" and "now you've taken a machine learning class." I'd love your thoughts so here are the first few! π§΅

Wonderful commentary by @nancybaym.bsky.social - "It's Bad. Now What?" Manages to encapsulate what so many of the conversations I've had with other digital media scholars the last year or two have centred around. journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....
The best part about writing a book is planning and researching. The worst part about writing a book is writing the book.
Sounds about right.
𧡠Trump administration AI policy is widely described as deregulatory. This description is misleading. What's happening is not the absence of governance but its rearrangement--intensive state intervention operating through mechanisms we don't typically call regulation. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
New article from me and collaborators just dropped.

Chicagoβs Joffrey Ballet will be the first American company to bring John Neumeierβs landmark narrative ballet βLiliomβ and Christopher Wheeldonβs βThe Sleeping Beautyβ to the stage next season.
Utterly abhorrent. Has anyone else run across this? #academicsky
I wrote my dissertation on all the ways in which news media used social media to represent public opinion in elections -- and all the democratic problems with it. But prediction markets are a whole 'nother level of wildness. The good news? @parkerbach.bsky.social & I are already planning our study.
What in the living hell is wrong with the association? After what this administration has done to female journalists? To journalism, generally?
As the laid off Middle East News Editor, I concur. Management eliminated the positions of every single staff correspondent and bureau chief in the Middle East.
Experts say this kind of media campaign is unprecedented and paints a distorted picture of immigrants and crime
Excellent statement from the Center for Democracy and Technologyβs @alexreevegivens.bsky.social, who notes that concern about todayβs action is wide ranging and bipartisan www.linkedin.com/posts/alexan...
The Chicago Loop Alliance announced plans for a new arts district in the Loop during its annual meeting Friday. The district will be supported by nearly 90 Loop arts organizations that will develop the neighborhood as an arts and culture destination.
. @smw.bsky.social went on @cnn.com to discuss Anthropic. βThere are existing standards around the use of tools in these contexts that need to be upheld and the Pentagon should be abiding by its own playbook.β shorturl.at/4gPYy

I'm heartbroken and furious. Monsters.
Of course, OpenAI is trying to get in on the money. For years, they have been dismantling safeguards to AI. The fact that they released ChatGPT in the way they did - after warnings about LLMs - demonstrates they never cared in the first place. The charade is over.

This is extremely telling about the confidence people lack in the administration. As you know, universities and private companies almost always bend over backwards for DOD contracts. I think the DOD is surprised that it is being told what to do and that it does not get its way.
Because, you know, there aren't numerous pieces just focusing on the benefits of AI. Well, more than just focusing on benefits - literally frothing at the mouth to extol the industry and "progress."
The new Ellison-controlled media combine will check the boxes for all three types of capture: capitalistic, oligarchic, and authoritarian.

These dudes wouldn't be doing this if they didn't think it would bring them more power.
