Love to have a local Democratic Party (Cook County) that endorses a crypto-booster for state treasurer and the scion of an old machine family for tax assessor over the progressive incumbent who has ruffled the feathers of corporate owners by trying to reform the appeals system that favors them. 1/2

STOP USING META. STOP USING TIKTOK. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, STOP USING X.

The days of getting around an annoying, ads-focused algorithm are long past. These are captured platforms serving a fascist oligarchy.

Heyo, Chicago pals: Quick note that the executive vice president of the Bob Loquercio Auto Group is vociferously defending the murder of Alex Pretti.

The auto group has 16 locations in and around Chicago, listed below. Please take your business elsewhere.

In Kane County’s new bison herd, a chance for Native Americans to reclaim what’s lost The captivating reintroduction of six bison in a forest preserve has deeper meaning to Indigenous people and advocates of tallgrass prairie restoration.

Excellent piece on the return of bison to the Kane County prairie by my WBEZ colleague Zachary Nauth. Notice the skillful way he swoops from the personal to historical, including biology, ecology, politics. With lovely photos by Pat Nabong Well worth your time.

The rollback is crucially bad because this was our very first real no-compromises protected intersection (islands on all four corners, proper setbacks, etc)

If we can’t even do one, very little hope we can start pumping them out city wide.

Before the return travel snafu, had a lovely time in London! Simultaneously inspiring and frustrating to experience an interconnected, reliable, well-signed, and frequent transit system. Let's hope NITA is the new TfL.

4. And this is hardest to replicate, but in the Netherlands, ~100% of drivers also bike regularly, or used to, or do sometimes. They are on the lookout for bikes. But the only way to get there is to build the intersections and other infra to get the majority of people onto bikes.

Masked ICE agents with military rifles dragging people into vans because of their skin color. Mothers & kids detained at the airport after a Sunday at the lakefront. If it weren’t happening down the block, I’d say this isn’t America. But it is. Know your rights. Chicago.gov/KYR

This is so stupid.

You can build a house with non union labor, but if you want to build a small coach house in the back you must use union labor?

if you were thinking about doing any of the following in support of ADUs, the end of this week is a good deadline to impose on yourself:

- sending a note to your alderperson
- writing a letter to the editor (Sun-Times, Insider Publications, Austin Weekly News, etc.)
- posting on your social media

lol - I meant 5 weeks when I posted this

Anyway, i need y’all’s signatures supporting re-legalizing coach houses

Changes like this demand communication, and it’s unclear whether the Mayor’s Office supported this effort in Springfield.

But Chicago taxpayers now own a multi-billion-dollar unfunded liability with no plan to pay for it.

01.08.2025 22:51 👍 5 🔁 1 💬 0 📌 0

The liability comes from a pension cap change:
• Old cap: $127,283, rising by ½ CPI or 3%
• New cap (7/1/25): $141,408, rising by full CPI or 3%
Just like a hike to your credit card interest rate, a small tweak compounded over decades is extremely costly.

I’m a former prosecutor and military officer. I deeply respect our police & firefighters—many are family.

I also teach Finance at DePaul & it’s hard to see how this won’t crowd out future spending on roads, schools, the CTA, even public safety & increase our borrowing costs.

By my calculations, this adds ~$3.9B in unfunded pension liability to the City of Chicago.

That’s the present value—the total payout is ~$11.8B between now and 2055.

It’s a massive hit to our budget. 🧵 www.chicagobusiness.com/politics/pri...
