Diagram showing coordinated oscillation of norepinephrine, blood vessel constriction, and intracranial CSF and blood volume during NREM sleep

During deep sleep, norepinephrine oscillation every ~50 sec cause blood vessels to constrict and push CSF through the brain. The frequency of norepinephrine oscillation predicts glymphatic clearance better than duration of REM sleep, deep sleep, or total sleep

Director of NIH neurological disorders institute is ousted, adding to leadership churn Walter Koroshetz, director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, will soon be leaving his role, STAT has learned. His departure

A @statnews.com exclusive from me: Walter Koroshetz, director of NIH's neurological disorders institute, has been ousted. Yet another example of NIH leadership churn. His departure means that 13 of the agency's 27 divisions will have interim leaders.

40 percent of MRI signals misinterpreted Interpretation of numerous MRI data may be incorrect: blood flow is not a reliable indicator of brain activity.

"40 percent of MRI signals do not correspond to actual brain activity"; "Since tens of thousands of fMRI studies worldwide are based on this assumption, our results could lead to opposite interpretations in many of them.”

The journal doesn’t actually bear the moniker Nature, which is reserved for more prestigious journals. It’s just Scientific Reports, and it’s a journal I never bothered to read when I was a researcher 😅

Scientific Reports is a crap journal. Impact factor isn’t everything (some good specialist journals score low bc the field is small, reviews journals score high bc of high citation rate, etc) but Scientific Reports’ IF is only 3.9 — compare to Nature Medicine=50, Nature=48.5, Science=45.8, Cell=42.5

"Respirators would have dropped the rate of COVID transmission by an estimated factor of 9, compared with 0.6 for surgical masks. A factor of 9 is enough to put SARS-COV-2 into exponential decay!
