not sure why everyone thinks this is such a big problem when an obvious solution exists
Global subsidies to the fossil fuel industry topped $7trn in 2022 alone. Itโs higher now.
The estimated cost of a Just Transition (warmer homes, better transport, clean energy etc) would cost* about 10-15% of the fossil fuel subsidies.
*itโs not a cost. Join the dots.

Guardian Knight, Isle of Thistles ๐ฟ
For as long as thistles have been growing here, the Knight has been watching over the Isle and its ancient castle, which houses a library of powerful plant magic. ๐ฟ
To earn access to the library, one must pass a challenge duel with the Knight. ๐ฟ
Reminds me of my mother in law describing a visit to Cairo zoo in the 80s and being shown one of their prize exhibits- a Friesian cow.

A google maps view of the area around the Strait of Hormuz, with crude markup showing the 4 steps to successfully clearing the strait: 1. Build up speed 2. Hit Trampoline 3. Cool backflip 4. Nail the landing The boat is illustrated using a clip art yacht, and the trampoline is also just kind of floating there.
wait. wait. everyone hold on. i've solved it

Clearly, Polanski lied a bit about his embarrassing news story. And since all lies are equally bad, that's very serious. But let's not lose sight of the fact that the reporter's breasts DID get larger, and none of the other party leaders have demonstrated magical powers of any kind.

Yesterday, a 110MW off-grid AI data center outside of Dublin was switched on - and it's powered entirely by fossil fuels. Developers went with natural gas engines (specifically RICE) to bypass the grid connection queue. They claim the engines "could" be switched to HVO, and that the project will attempt to connect to the grid "when possible". What does this mean for Ireland's climate goals? According to my estimates, this single project will increase the entire country's annual GHG emissions by ~1%. Assumptions: - The project seems to be using Rolls Royce (mtu) 4000 Series RICE which have an electrical efficiency of 44% https://lnkd.in/eRX4PRuf - Modifying the NREL life cycle gas emissions factor with this efficiency yields 656.75 gCO2e/kWh https://lnkd.in/gfgs2X6P - Assuming a 90% capacity factor because AI hyperscale data centers run near 24/7 to recoup massive GPU costs - Irelandโs 2024 GHG emissions = 53.8 million tCO2e https://lnkd.in/ejjRgRpE hashtag#DataCenters hashtag#Sustainability hashtag#ArtificialIntelligence

Ireland's new fossil-fuelled #Petrotech data center will increase Ireland's **total** (everything, not just the power sector) emissions by ~1%
Absolutely nuts. A 1% national increase - for what? Come on boosters, explain why this is worth it ๐ซ

i do think this sort of thing is part of why silicon valley swung right and is trying to eat every media platform: in their day to day life if they ask this question an underling can politely demur in a way that doesnt hurt their feelings. maybe with a slide deck about how big boats really are
there is a child-like naivety to the way business leaders approach sociopolitical problems that would be really sweet if it wasn't coming from the leader of a company with 30,000 employees and 3 billion dollars in revenue

Do we want more hotels, or more homes?
Let's making building homes cheaper, by making building hotels more expensive.
Dublin builds too many hotels โ and nowhere near enough homes.
The Greens want to change the city tax system to fix that.
Double the tax on new hotels, use the money to cut tax on new homes. ๐๏ธ๐๏ธ๐๏ธ

How much would it cost to produce and publish a Choctaw-Gaeilge dictionary?
I'm thinking of stuff I'd do if I won the Euromillions, and am wondering if this would cost more or less than an apartment in Paris.
Note the absence of Ireland from this list despite government parties committing to do so before the last election...
But I ainโt gonna spend any time on it because in the meantime every 3 months a person is torn to pieces by a crocodile in North Queensland

Book cover of "We'll prescribe you a cat" by Syou Ishida and Translated by E.Madison Shimoda. It's a mint green background. In the top left corner there is an open plastic orange bottle the type used for pills. Falling out of the bottle, are cats of different colours and shapes. There a sleek black cat, a chubby ginger cat on it's back. A white with black spots cat upside down. A little pure white kitten with it's arms in the air. And a grey and white cat walking towards us. They are reminiscent of medicine pills. In the bottom right is the lid of the pill box.

Tbh, I think sleep deprivation did most of the work.
The last story is particularly moving dealing with grief and when to let go.
The author has a lot of reverence for cats & that shines through. I say as the back of my neck is kicked by mine so my head can be used as a footrest.

My favourite grasshopper fact: Grasshoppers first appeared on the planet 250 million years ago.
Grass did not appear on the planet until 40 million years ago
Imagine it: 210 million years, hopping around on any random surface you can find, waiting for the grass that will make you truly yourself.
