On the HERJ blog today, author Jason Todd explores the themes in his research article and why he chose to publish in HERJ.

This is a fascinating, personal blog.

Telling Stories at A-Level: Chekhov, the Cholera, and the Contempt Stories, it seems, are in vogue in the History classroom. And for good reason. Telling a gripping tale, as Christine Counsell has recently...

How and with what effect can stories be used to introduce enquiry questions in #history?

Following @citoyenneclaire.bsky.social and @jcarrollhistory.bsky.social's excellent @histassoc.bsky.social Teaching History article on telling stories at KS5

Teaching History 200: Telling Histories

I also therefore see the article as a small contribution to the phenomenal achievement of history teachers in building a coherent, generative and codified body of professional knowledge over decades. 4/5

In celebration of TH's 200th edition, the article tries to live up to the publication's best traditions. We adopt a cautious criticality to a problem of practice in the classroom - acknowledging, celebrating and building on both the triumphs and ground-clearing done by history teachers before us.3/5

In particular, we acknowledge, explore and attempt to mitigate some of history teachers’ commonly stated concerns about stories. We aimed to reconcile captivating narrative, disciplinary integrity and curricular representativeness - not wholly successfully! 2/5

Cracking article from @citoyenneclaire.bsky.social and @jcarrollhistory.bsky.social in latest Teaching History. Couldn’t be more timely for me as I’ve been consciously writing and using stories much more with my A Level students. Plenty here both to encourage and to challenge me.

Lovely to find the 200th edition of TH in my postbox today, including an article by me and @jcarrollhistory.bsky.social. Hopefully it will contribute to the journal's tradition of starting conversations amongst history teachers! @histassoc.bsky.social

Characterising curricular goals for colligations in students’ causal arguments In the β€˜historical thinking’ tradition of curriculum design, the philosopher of history W.H. Walsh’s concept of colligation has mostly been adopted to enable students to construct coherent, powerful a...

In this paper a study was conducted to identify curricular goals for colligation in students’ causal arguments. The study finds that students were capable constructing their own causal colligation, appreciating the disciplinary framework that underpinned those constructions:

Responding to SHP 2025: Part 2, Claire Holliss on Stories at A-Level The 2025 Schools History Project (SHP) conference was, as ever, a highlight of the teaching year and a stimulus for all sorts of thoughts. ...

Huge thanks to @citoyenneclaire.bsky.social for a wonderful @1972shp.bsky.social workshop on storytelling at KS5!

Following an earlier blog on @arthurjchapman.bsky.social workshop, here are some (incomplete) thoughts stimulated by Claire Holliss' session.

Settling down 2 hear the stellar @citoyenneclaire.bsky.social reflect on & explore the affordances & constraints of narrative @ A Level. Do stories bias towards the individual not the general? How can we tell stories about those who leaves few archival traces? Does story bias to the dramatic? #SHP25

I've spent years encouraging students to use causal verbs alongside conjunctions. But this can lead to confused language/mixed metaphors.

Inspired by @jcarrollhistory.bsky.social, I'm planning to explicitly integrate metaphors into KS5 using targeted vocab
