In 1935, the novel "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" by Horace Stanley McCoy (1897-1955) was published. The story revolves around the dance marathons of the Great Depression. McCoy would draw on his experience as a bouncer at a Santa Monica pier, and the novel would be adapted to film in 1969.
The first movie to be shown to airline passengers was 'The Lost World', directed by Harry O. Hoyt, and an adaptation of the Arthur Conan Doyle novel of the same name. It was shown as a promo on the London to Paris Imperial Airways flight in 1925.

So what is auteur theory in cinema? Auteurism existed in French film criticism in the 1940s and introduced by Francois Truffaut as "policy of the authors" in 1954. The term was invented & formalized by film critic Andrew Sarris in 1962.
