It has come to this because the government has continually blocked the implementation of the 1st referendum (from Sep 2021) where 59.1% of Berliners voted for the socialization of large corporate landlords.

Despite an expert commission handpicked by the government themselves confirming its legality

New (legally binding) referendum coming soon!

Berlin tenants are proposing their own socialization law which would force the government to act.

Socialization would transfer 220,000 apartments from the city's largest landlords to the collective control of the people who live in them!

remember how Berlin citizens voted to take back the city from corporate landlords in 2021? it was an emancipatory promise many applauded.
since then, corporate landlords increased their stronghold on the city to 25% of housing stok, and w it, rents went up by 9% annually.

Quick final thought: closing these loopholes and tightening the regulations is still a clear positive thing to do and helps tenants be able to afford/stay in their homes

22.01.2025 12:17 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

In other words landlords relentless attempts to maximize profit at the expense of tenants that has more to do with the nature of landlordism than the actual regulations.

Great that it concludes with enteignen and talking about the second volksentscheid

22.01.2025 12:06 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

And even in line with landlords' previous attempts to move apartments from the long-term to short-term rental market via platforms like Airbnb.
