Built with Readymag—a tool to design anything on the web.
"..skating in Portland was not legal until 2000."
“It happened a few times where the police would pick us up, beat us up, steal our shit and leave us out at terminal six. The cops were fucking savage,” said Kent Dahlgren, a pioneer in the development of the park."

Portland’s Burnside Skatepark celebrates anniversary
The Burnside Skatepark turns 34 on Halloween. It is credited as being the first DIY skatepark project.
"A lot of people have described it in a lot of different ways. Some of them: it’s our home, it’s our church. It’s where we go practice our Zen, our kung fu, all those things. Skateboarding is that." - Jay Meer

How Portland, Ore., Became the Skateboard Capital of the World
Tom Miller and other activists helped bring a system of skateparks to the city.
"In the 1980s, skaters built wooden ramps under freeways or in roadside gullies, but Portland native @kent-dahlgren.bsky.social says many of his early projects were stolen. So in 1990, a group of skaters began building concrete ramps under Portland’s Burnside Bridge."

"Skateparks do have the potential to serve as tools for neighborhood redevelopment. Under the Burnside bridge was a hotbed of illegal activity before a group of skateboarders began constructing concrete ramps at the site, eventually earning the blessing of the city."
