An actor pretending to be a Roman general of the late 4th century AD wearing armour, red cloak and two swords of a much earlier period plus wrist bands which no one outside of a Hollywood movie ever wore
Actor Richard Burton in the film The Robe, wearing a muscled cuirass and wrist bands, relaxes on a block of marble
Stilicho, a late Roman general as depicted on an ivory panel wearing long sleeved tunic, big brooch, long sword at his belt and a spear in his right hand
Why was everyone in *Civilisations: Rise and Fall* dressed like they were in a 1950s Hollywood epic?
Stilicho looked like Richard Burton in *The Robe* with muscled cuirass and pointless wrist guards rather than in long sleeved tunic and big chonky brooch
Who was the historical advisor on this? 😱😱
One of the reasons why Finland is the happiest country in the world is that the public broadcaster Yle sends a live feed of the first 8 weeks of a pack of puppies every fall. It’s already the fifth edition of ”Finland’s most therapeutic live feed”.
This is what I call value for my tax money

This image shows a partial colour reconstruction of the Prima Porta Augustus including a cuirass in reds, blues, and golds. Military dress in red, and purple toga details.
✨Augustus in colour✨
The Prima Porta Augustus is one of the most famous sculptures of ancient Rome. Earlier depictions of the sculpture noted the remnants of colour but the craze for cleaned statuary meant much detail was lost to the casual gaze.

Small ceramic bottles being sampled for residue with a Dremel rotary tool (A) and a dental tool (B).
NEW #Phoenician small ceramic bottles were traditionally thought to hold perfumes and medicines. Residue analysis found chemical traces of wine, resins, pitch and palm oil, indicating their uses were much more multifunctional than expected.

1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

This is the Roman bathhouse at Bearsden in Glasgow, the only visible remains of the fort on the Antonine Wall that once stood there. Featuring hot and cold rooms as well as plunge pools and a latrine, it also had glazed windows and painted plaster decoration. #RomanFortThursday
