These captchas just keep getting harder #rstats

No exaggeration, the vote split on this poll is hysterical.

I love benchmarks. Making the number lower is the only motivation I need.

To me the mental exhaustion I’ve experienced using CC is very similar to the mental exhaustion I’ve experience managing junior engineers. The difference is that results come back in 30 minutes vs. 3 days, and CC doesn’t gain institutional knowledge from the experience. An interesting tradeoff.

Spotlighting The World Factbook as We Bid a Fond Farewell Somewhat devastating news today from the CIA: One of CIA’s oldest and most recognizable intelligence publications, The World Factbook, has sunset. There's not even a hint as to why they …

The CIA just stopped publishing their World Factbook and took every page, including the archived copies of previous versions!

This sucks. It was public domain, so I recovered the 2020 edition (the last one published as a zip file) and shared it to GitHub simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/5/t...

I can’t remember ever making an error due to shadowing. It always annoyed me when coworkers insisted on keeping the warning on (especially combined with insisting on -Werror).

Of course, you can also microwave on low power in the morning if you transfer to a microwave-safe container, but somehow that feels like too much effort to me.

Not microwave, but what I always did was: "Before going to bed, boil 4 cups of water in a pot. Then add one cup of oats and simmer for 1 minute. Cover the pot, cool, and store overnight in the refrigerator. The next morning reheat over low heat, stirring occasionally."

With headphones the cameras don’t need to replicate our eyes’ field of view. I’d love to have the situational awareness of a prey animal! Not that that’s the implementation here, but I love the possibilities that form factor unlocks.

As a freshman 20+ years ago, my CS professor shared a quote: "Computers do exactly what you tell them to. The bad news is they do exactly what you tell them to." At the time this seemed obviously self-evident.

Now it's clear that in my children's time, this "truth" will become an anachronism.

Yo, the same microwave technology was invented for radar, dries lumber, powers wifi and bluetooth, and has a million other uses. It’s a fundamental, ubiquitous technology.

It seems unsurprising that, on average, an undergraduate student will lose one or more of their grandparents during college. And given that there's a large spike in the death rates of the elderly leading up to the holidays, it would be weirder if you didn't have any grieving students, wouldn't it?

Sure, but if Prelude wasn’t implicitly imported maybe the issues would have been fixed by now. It’s been a problem so long I was still using hugs when I first became aware of it :p

Given all its issues (head, error, String, etc., etc., etc.) my vote goes to Prelude.
