Learning a lot from all the fantastic work presented at #SJDM in NYC this year. Check out my poster #3 on the neural basis of risk-taking behavior and the gut-brain axis influence in this mechanism. #decisionmaking #neuroskyence

And of course, our sample has a high percentage of international students that would be excluded if we shift to the local language 😓

They are. In fact between 90/93% of the local population is fluent in English, with potentially higher fluency in our target age group. It is more than annoying. It is clearly discriminatory.

It limits communication, demands validation of tasks and questionnaires, limits recruitment, limits the participation of research assistants and my personal participation in the project. As consequence, the communication limitations might affect results. How would you handle this situation?

Extremely disappointed after receiving a METC review forcing our international group, in a major international university, in a country where the majority in the target age speaks English, to use the local language in our study. Purely based on politics and prejudice. Weird times. 😔 #AcademicSky

Jesus Christ, look at this. All this money just gone, when every single one of these clowns should have known better at the time.

Remember this when you criticize someone for taking support (which let’s be honest, is never much more than a few bucks) from social security to survive.

Tip for women in science:

Don't collaborate with men who are not allies in the fight against sexism (unless you have no choice, which happens often of course).

You may think it is worth it, but really, it never is. You will end up mistreated and your ideas likely erased.

I often hear that attachment is “right-#brain” centred and that there is a general “right-brain” versus “left-brain” dominance for complex behaviours and personality traits. But this is a #myth!

The Brain’s Glial Cells Might Be As Important As Neurons These lesser-known nervous system cells were long thought to be the “glue” holding neurons together. They’re much more.

Half of the cells in the brain are neurons, and the other half are glial cells.

Journalist Yasemin Saplakoglu joins us to talk about how these cells communicate with neurons and why they might be critical in how we experience pain.
