IDK to what extent the claims this article makes are true - obviously I can look at test scores like anyone else with 2 brain cells to rub together, but causation is trickier to nail down - but my experience bears out that more tech in schools has mostly been about $ and marketing, not learning.

Before we went into pandemic-induced remote learning, I was not permitted to reserve school computer carts for my students b/c technology was “for general education students, not ESL.”

It was about restricting access until suddenly it was about buying into what non-educators were pushing.

To answer the question someone did not ask: yes I’d love to take public transit to work, but it takes 3x longer (90+ min) and involves 1.5 mile+ walks on both ends.

Please flag down your local teachers as we drive at no more than 3 mph down the ill-plowed streets of Boston in these trying times.

As a bonus to you (though I would argue, not to us), we are an extended day school. I can be your space saver from 8-4.

Unlike your trash cans, beach chairs, milk crates, etc., our vehicles cannot be swiftly removed by people who do not respect the institution of space savers.

And comparatively speaking, much of Namibia (and particularly the part where I lived) has good infrastructure. And still: half a community without these basics.

The community I served during my first 2 years is 25 miles from the nearest paved road and 40 miles from the nearest town. About half the community didn’t have electricity or running water when I lived there.

I just got an email from the National Peace Corps Association (RPCV organization) that Peace Corps is launching an AI initiative, and I think I will launch myself into the sun.
