Talked to multiple reporters at small-town papers in MN who said it's extremely hard to expose wrongdoing in a rural area because people hate it and you end up with enemies.

One reason Minneapolis remains in the world's eye is we have one of the most robust & independent media ecosystems remaining in the country. You all need this...and more! @mprnews.org @startribune.com @sahanjournal.bsky.social @minnesotareformer.com @minnpost.bsky.social @racketmn.com etc.
We gotta come up with a better system than βeverything rests on whether these twelve billionnaires are niceβ
journalists are workers who deserve to be paid fairly for our labor and I think that far too few consumers of media recognize or even care about this fact
Yikes. The Latino-owned businesses in Mercado Central in Minneapolis report a 90% dip in business since the major influx of federal agents into Minnesota. This is where Iβd go to get my Mexican groceries and my pozole fix when I lived in the Twin Cities
don't think I've ever been so in the thick of something that's Big News like this, but it makes a sharp contrast between skilled journalists, who want to understand the situation and turn in sharp, considered dispatches, and streamers, disaster tourists who are desperate to see a civil war break out
I wrote about my childhood friend Alexi Pretti. Please read it and share it and remember him as a human being. @theverge.com
you should not share a post that's a screenshot without a link to a news item. you should not share a post that's a video or picture without some kind of sourcing. we're in a new bad era and these are now basic practices.
... also photogs and journos gotta eat so share their work.
I subscribed to @startribune.com the moment I left the newsroom for the last time en route to Oregon. At first, it was a way to keep up with my stellar soon-to-be former colleagues. Now it feels like the most essential subscription I have: www.startribune.com/subscribe
I've been informed that the man in this video is Matthew James Obadiah Allen, better known as Twin Cities hip hop artist Nur-D
"The man shot by federal agents this morning has died, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian OβHara told the Minnesota Star Tribune."
To be clear: I love my home state! (Just ask any Minnesotan who had to suffer my musings about its culinary superiority during my three years in the Midwest.) But man, Minnesotans sure do hold a specific and enduring appreciation for Minnesota.
Scoop: Hundreds of Target employees pen letter saying the Minneapolis retailer βabandoned its communityβ

Iβd love to be proven wrong, but here I run into people who really love being Portlanders, or who were born and raised in Grants Pass and canβt imagine living anywhere else, or moved to Bend and settled down. But few folks who really lean into being Oregonians the way Minnesotans do.
This might be *the* thing I miss most about living in the Twin Cities. No matter what part of the urban core you visit, youβll find several people who speak fondly of the state as a whole, and of specific places in particular. You donβt really get that here in Oregon.
I am utterly in awe of my former colleagues at @startribune.com. It's been just over two weeks since an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good and the newsroom has been a paragon of community service as the federal immigration surge continues in the Twin Cities www.startribune.com/ice-raids-mi...
Itβs -9 degrees. Downtown Minneapolis is packed for the anti-ICE rally and the crowd keeps growing
Havenβt been to Powellβs in a minute and I forgot just how many people wear clogs to the bookstore

Me: Lines up 45 minutes early for a 12:30 p.m. showing at a movie theater that doesnβt assign seats.
Also me: What the hell are all of these other people doing in line? Donβt they have JOBS?
My listening age is my own damn business, you nosy ragamuffins!
This is the pizza Christmas lore. My family made turkey every year for christmas until my mom realized we all snacked all day and werenβt hungry and weβd be eating leftover turkey for a week. We tried various other things: ham, Cornish game hens. And then one year everyone was disgustingly sick and
So weβre just running around calling robes cardigans now? Words mean things!
Just this week I talked with the Voices of Roosevelt staff advisor about how much I liked a story they did where they laid out what PPS will do in the case that ICE is near a school.
And here we are...
this is wild: while Stephen Miller's guy was in Minnesota for his uncle's funeral, somebody was able to see his entire phone and take pictures of his Signal group chats talking about military deployments to Portland, and brought them to the Strib (gift link: www.startribune.com/trump-offici...)

Susan Du continues to be the coolest fucking person Iβve ever met
My commute nightmares in the Twin Cities rarely had anything to do with construction and more to do with buttheads who would either park or drive in the bike lane!
