Waltham Forest heritage plaque for Beryl Swain at 18 Grosvenor Park Road, Walthamstow.

Beryl Swain was born in Walthamstow #OTD 1936. A motorcycle road racer, she was the first woman solo rider in the Isle of Man TT 1962. Eleanor, Lady Wigram died #OTD 1841. Mother of 17 children & stepmother to six, she was an active local philanthropist, developing education provision, & establishing the Walthamstow Female Benefit Society in 1815. She lived at Walthamstow House, Shernhall St, and is buried at Walthamstow St Mary's.

'Gipsy Smith, his life and work' 1903 autobiography of evangelist Rodney Smith (1860-1947), born to a Romani family in Epping Forest. He recounts his work as a preacher, following meeting with Wm Booth at a Plaistow mission. His book is an important source for Romani life & customs. #BookoftheMonth
