There is a certain distance the NY Times, NPR and most rich progressives have where it is all about caring and being a good person and there is no ability to see what is happening like a wild fire a few miles away that is about to consume us all.
Risks to wealth by speaking out seem real but worrying about the attacks was always just wanting to be seen as a good person by others and those impacted are never seen as real people who may actually be impacted for real.
The same is true about attacks on immigrants, LGBT people and abortion rights. Even progressive business leaders who expressed views on such subjects previously are either kissing up to the administration or ignoring attacks now.
Some refer to the super rich as the Epstein class. Its not that all the super rich molested kids but the rich and cultural elites all excused what was going on and looked the other way as if child molestation was just an activity that only those who supported cancel cultural could treat as serious
The world is being set on fire by a sociopath... but the Ezra Klein at the NY Times will try to interview people to make us feel more comfortable, the paper will run polls and worry about the midterm and everything will be framed as if nobody reading could possibly be personally impacted.
The war in Iran is surreal. Those with power and economic and cultural elites barely cared about masked men shoving our neighbors into vans and setting up concentration camps. But the same elites will likely be impacted by the Iran war fallout and wont really do anything to slow down or stop it
With my kid sick and half my coworkers suddenly sick with something it occurs to me the US is in a unique position to be vulnerable if some new Covid thing came out since everyone would refuse to mask or isolate and RFK Jr would prevent vaccines etc...
Guy who has bragged about doing lines of coke off dirty toilet seats (and is implicated in Epstein files) wants to use federal power to crack down on iced coffee ... and this is party that used to claim it was about small government.

If they see themselves as being part of some end time story but they are the ones hurrying it up by making bad things happen wouldnt they be identifying with the evil side in that story?
The worse part is how our local reps spun their votes:
"I voted yes on the National Defense Authorization Act today. This bill restricts the Presidentβs ability to direct military strikes without Congressional authorization

At some point stopping all the awful stuff going on means taking it seriously and not assuming an amendment here or there about specific things does much when you are giving him hundreds of billions for weapons he can use any way he wants
It is worth remembering how many Democrats voted to fund Trump's ability to go to war even when it became clear how much worse he was going to be this time around.

The past year went from DOGE, to ICE raids, to troops in DC/LA, to the occupation of Minneapolis with protesters killed. Now Iran. What's next, a nuclear strike on Iran's nuclear sites? When our response stays the same, he knows no matter how much he escalates there are no consequences.
Starting a war so you could invoke emergency war powers
Remember what I said about how, when Trump is flailing, they start inserting a fake, fictional Trump into their stories, who is acting rationally and sanely?
He knows that if he pokes enough bears one will attack back and once that happens he can use that as an excuse to justify powers the public would never support otherwise
Trump's goal is a terrorist attack in the US that will allow him to consolidate power. Sure, neocons hace pushed for an Iran attack for years, but Trump had low popularity and hoped a war could help and could be used to justify the unpopular dictator like things he has been trying to do here
It's genuinely insane that many of the newspaper columnists who cheered us into the war in Iraq are still employed at big legacy outlets cheering us into a new war with Iran.
alexander_s_vindman β’ 21h My statement on the U.S.-Iran War: @ Threads Statement from U.S. Senate Candidate Alex Vindman: 66 The Iranian regime is evil. For nearly half a century, it has inflicted death and destruction on Americans and our allies. I know that firsthand. I was wounded by an Iranian-made bomb while serving in Iraq. I also know this: wars without a plan are dangerous. Forever wars drain American strength, put our troops at risk without clear purpose, distract from real strategic priorities, and divert resources we should be investing at home. With American troops in harm's way, the President owes Congress and the American people immediate answers. What is the mission? What is the strategy? What is the end state? The Constitution requires it. 9 C) 2 229 + 36 ") 37 2
Meanwhile, here was Vindman's reaction to Trump attacking Iran: throat-clearing about how evil Iran is, mentioning that he was wounded by an "Iranian-made bomb"(?), and only asking for more information from Trump for more information about the goals of the war.
Does Starmer want Labour to poll at single digits?
I think the truly damning thing about the Dem comms response is that they had months to prepare for today and there's zero coordination, no unified message. Just every D leader responding like they quickly hammered out a statement in a panic at 6 am this morning
Within a year I expect to hear: "Trump's decision to rutually sacrifice the school children touring the White House to Captain Crunch for the lack of prize he found in the bottom of his breakfast cereal was uncalled for and unconstitutional. I will be calling him later today to express my outrage."
We will eventually get to: "Trump's decision to ritually sacrifice the school children touring the White House to Captain Crunch for the lack of prize he found in the bottom of his breakfast cereal was uncalled for and unconstitutional. I will be calling him later today to express my outrage."
Millions could die or it could end suddenly because Trump is distracted by a squirrel on the White House lawn. But pundits will debate things like the world hasn't become what it is.
Is it really surprising that a corrupt, crazed dictator obsessed with popularity and surrounded by sycophants would go to war? Any justifications are after-the-fact, since nothing he does is ever thought out, and opponents find it easier to imagine an evil plan than to face reality
Openly and explicitly exactly. A lot of STEM brained people canβt imagine that visibly changing your whole thing to do whatever people say they want canβt isnβt the same thing as championing what people want
