I actually find the dearth of work in West African contexts across various research disciplines extremely concerning.
Do people realise East and Southern Africa are not the entirety of Africa? π©
It's so interesting where the researchers go and where the for-profit go sha

Saw someone post something about phasing out the whole cold email with research proposal > feedback thing for PhD students in favour of direct interviews due to AI and while I understand why that is happening, I don't think enough people understand how this creates further exclusion

Harder than I thought to implement my plan to take the day off whenever I wake up tired/have a stressful day the day before but I will continue to steal bits of time to sleep in.

So many great points were made in this thread and so many, not so good ones too.
I'm actually surprised to see so much dissent because I've seen you people on this app equate the desire to offload household/mental drudgery with wanting to be slave owners. So what's different this time? π©

Hijikata Toshizou Being a BadAss.. | Golden Kamuy | part 1

π Yes, yes I did watch S1. I've just seen it's currently on the final season.
The first 75 seconds is what I remember the most from it. youtu.be/AIaLCQbMtCg?...
I haven't seen any anime in almost 4 years so I have a big backlog. My plan is to go by Gigguk's annual top 10 and work my way through

The problem is the responses are often very, very incorrect.
These people don't understand our jokes, our shared online histories. We're all speaking English but we might as well be speaking a different language.
It's depressing and slightly scary how confident some of the answers are.

Because Twitter's algorithm is now messed up your feed is no longer curated on the basis of geographical location so more and more and more, there are people, I can only assume Americans, who keep posting screenshots from Nigerian Twitter on r/Peterexplainsthejoke or r/petah for clarification.

Weirdly it's a bit like fantasy for me. There are some amazing fantasy series that will probably never be adapted, and for which fans now think only an animation will do justice.
But I've always very easily found fantasy (and anime actually) communities where I can get solid recommendations.

Ah I hadn't thought of that. I think comics generally were relatively inaccessible to me back in Nigeria unlike audio-visual content of any kind. I also have always liked animation so anime for me, felt like a graduation from the kids animation that dominated my childhood to something more mature

anime for the rest and I did read a few chapters of Mo Dao Zu Shi, which is manhua I guess.
It's so weird. When it comes to anime and donghua, I've always been more visual but usually I prefer novels to films. I think maybe because of the language barrier? I'm team sub over dub and I can't read

Dororo is so good! So many great scenes from it and I really like the ethical conflicts it explored.
Forgiveness vs revenge vs justice. Bodily autonomy vs self-sacrifice vs ego.
It's so good.

Dorohedoro and Dororo are in the top 5 anime I recommend to people. I'm always worried when I recommend dorohedoro because S1 ended on a cliffhanger and I wasn't sure there was ever going to be a S2 but then again,

I remember reading an interview by one of Nollywood's biggest actresses, Shan George, where she mentioned that she would often be booed or harassed in public because people could not tell her persona as an actress apart from her personality in real life in the early 2000s!

Iirc their entire argument was because ancient Egyptian culture is extinct "the pyramids belong to us all"/"we have dibs on the pyramids"

Thinking about this latter group all week - the thousands of African young people sold dreams of employment in the Gulf, often by their own government. Already some of the most precarious existences in the legal world now stuck in a war they donβt understand, in languages they donβt speak.
