Thank the Lord for the courageous existence of Harriet Tubman.

Westminster Meeting House raided by Metropolitan Police again. Statement: β€œFor Quakers, faith and action are inseparable. Peaceful protest, prayer and nonviolent action are integral parts of many Quakers' religious life.

Whilst we take the planning of criminal acts very seriously, we believe that this incident is a deliberate targeting of committed young people who want to make our country a more equitable place. This raid is part of a systematic stifling of dissent.

That this is the second time in a year that the police have raided our meeting house dramatically illuminates the broader trend in the UK of cracking down on those who disagree with the government. The right to protest is fundamental to our democracy. It's a key part of how people make their voices heard between elections.” – Oliver Robertson, Head of Witness and Worship

Yesterday evening, for the second time in a year, the Met Police raided Westminster Quaker Meeting House and arrested a number of young nonviolent activists.

Great story. Thanks for sharing it. (Re: the match - I'd also failed to take in until I watched the highlights that Gordon ran the length of the opposition half before he won the penalty.)

There's something very poetic about your "he set off down the wing etc. etc." I used to tell my students to avoid "etc." but it is a thing of beauty here. What a wonderful goal!

And I would say, "Anyone can burn a cake - it happens , don't beat yourself up about it - but not everyone makes nice scones." (I'd pass over the cow pat in silence because I don't want to know how the burnt cake ended up there.)

YouTube is terrible in a very similar way. I searched 'Steal away to Jesus' and listened to Mavis Staples. But most of the supposedly related suggestions were obviously AI-generated nonsense: creepily fake images offered as illustration of patently false information.

I do wonder what the opposite of a 'happy clapper' is. 'Miserable cynic' perhaps . I'm all for clapping happily, shouting exuberantly, and jumping up with joy. 6-1 is enough to make me happy for a while.

Looks as if the USA is heading for a situation where masked, heavily armed, unidentifiable ICE agents are going to be checking voters' ID at the November mid-terms in order to disenfranchise as many US citizens as possible. What an absurd and gloomy prospect. #restoredemocracy

Yes and the trial of Charles 1, according to my sketchy understanding, paved the way for modern conceptions of equality before the law.

It's impossible to get it right, I think. I wish you strength anyway. Thanks for sharing the poem. I would have loved to have rung my mum to read it to her. She would have appreciated it.

Very beautiful. I suppose she saved this poem to help her when she missed her mam. My mum died last June and we've just made room (yesterday) for a few pieces of her best furniture: from Tynemouth to Bristol and now in Huddersfield. They look out of place, make me sad, but I'm glad they're here.

β€œI am somebody” shaped how millions of us saw ourselves as kids, including me. That message mattered. It still does.
