And I cannot understand knitting or crochet at all even without a pattern! My brain doesn't understand the logistics of the stitch no matter how much someone dumbs it down for me, it's just fabric algebra. (This is also, incidentally, why I'm really bad at tying rope in shibari, lol).

I don't have the physical ability to remember a lot of the different techniques in embroidery for example, or the memory to remember them all (looking up the same technique I've done 20 times before and forgetting it from scratch and having to relearn from scratch gets tedious), so I can only admire

I'm fortunate that counting patterns or colours doesn't hurt my brain as much as counting numbers (as in, looking at a number that correlates to a colour and then doing additional counting on top of that). But paint by numbers is intense. It's interesting how differently it can manifest!

Paint by numbers is kind of hilarious when you have dyscalculia. Like 'this solid section of numbers will now convince my brain that is 4 different numbers' along with '16 and 19 are the same number and I literally cannot tell the difference until I get it wrong.'

Anyway, here's some Instagram usernames you can plug-in immediately to find some x-stitch pattern makers who aren't using AI, as well as artists and sticker makers etc:

"AI slop is everywhere" is both true, and a weak flex if it's not followed up immediately with "but I almost never have to see it, because I have cultivated this incredible circle of indie artists who I love to support and who make the coolest work ever."

If you set aside a couple of hours, and start looking at who your favourite indie artists follow or recommend on Social Media of Your Choice (hopefully you already support indie artists/creators), you will be awash in a surfeit of amazing choices. Too many, in fact. It's glorious.

I found individual sticker makers like Whiskeyrabbit, who share WIPs of their artwork, or even just photos. Even the artists who hate filming everything online will show just a few seconds. I've found more artists. More sticker makers. Yes, I can't use Generic Craft Store anymore, but...win-win?

I have found *so many more* cross stitch pattern makers *since* AI, because I stopped looking in generic places and started specifically digging deeper, and I found people making banger after banger, but slowly, showing their process, sharing the labour and love involved.

I've seen some folks complain about the amount of AI dreck in creator communities (cross stitch, stickers etc.) There is a time-consuming but easy-ish way around this:

Find indie creators, look at their process, and if their style has changed dramatically since before idk 2023. Problem solved.

* Research Story - Had, in premise, all the things I love. Managed to make them all as difficult or punishing as possible. Fans also feel like "crowdfunded this game" fans. They have a sycophantic quality that makes even average critique get dogpiled. (Not me, saw it on the Discussion boards).

* Dredge - Fishing game. Do you like horror? Do you like rotten deformed fish? Do you like the existential dread of an all-seeing eye getting closer and closer to you to ruin your life every evening when some fish can only be caught during the evening? Then this game is for you. It wasn't for me.

* Ropuka's Idle Island - This is like if an idler wanted to be the slowest game ever. The aesthetic is SO nice. But I sadly need...slightly more fast development in my idlers. This would be excellent for someone who genuinely wants to forget about a game they have open for days.
