Screenshot of a paper entry: Fictional Failures and Real-World Lessons: Ethical Speculation Through Design Fiction on Emotional Support Conversational AI Authors: Faye Kollig, Jessica Pater, Fayika Farhat Nova, Casey Fiesler (There are tabs with "abstract" and "summary" and "summary" is selected.)
The ACM Digital Library, where a LOT of computing-related research is published (I'd say at least 75% of my own publications), is now not only providing (without consent of the authors and without opt-in by readers) AI-generated summaries of papers, but they appear as the *default* over abstracts.
Earlier this year, the Trump administration gutted the Institute of Museum and Library Services, leading to canceled federal grants. Now, after a court order, those grants are being reinstated. n.pr/4phxzwN
Screenshot reads, "A Carnivorous βDeath Ballβ Has Emerged from the Deep This newly-discovered species is being called the βdeath-ball spongeβ for its appendages, which end in orbs and are covered in micro-hooks meant to capture prey."
Not now, carnivorous death ball

On Monday, November 3rd, Microsoft will start using your LinkedIn data for AI training. And remember, you're opted in by default.
To toggle it off π Account - Settings & Privacy > Data privacy > Data for Generative AI Improvement.
USEFUL: Generative Al License Tracker from Ithaca S+R sr.ithaka.org/our-work/gen... Tracking deals publishers have with companies licensing their scholarly content for use as training data for LLM
(Noting the 'their content' aspect of this - read your publishing agreements folks before signing)
Me, explaining copyright as a librarian:
In 1976, copyright protection became automatic. Registration was no longer required in order to retain your copyright to the work.
Until 2022, when AI decided that copyright is just vibes
Weβd love to know if people are using rescued data. We have download numbers but it would be helpful to know how people are using them! If you have use cases get in touch!
Freedom of expression!
Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.
While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.
I learned today that Ohio State faculty canβt put a land acknowledgement statement in their syllabus and that we canβt ask students to voluntarily disclose their pronouns. #firstamendment #ohiostate
A generous thread that touches on a lot of the conversations that are obviated when "Gen AI" is presented as a monolith rather than a marketing term whose nuances need to be teased out in order to have curious, productive conversations.
Chalk. That's the big threat here at OSU. I can't think of a more obvious way to say "we're afraid of what you have to say" than to ban chalk.

I absolutely loved yesterday's #IASSIST2025 keynote by Prof. Shawn Sobers people.uwe.ac.uk/Person/Shawn... with art + anthropology + history + data + pianola
Excellent presentation by @lyndamk.bsky.social on @datarescueproject.org and other data rescue efforts, including @SafeguardingResearch.fedihum.org.ap.brid.gy out of Germany. Such important work to safeguard our cultural heritage being done through the work of groups across the world. #IASSIST2025
We are presenting on our work and wider data rescue efforts at #IASSIST2025 conference in Bristol, England this week. If you aren't familiar with @iassistdata.bsky.social but you are interested in #data, you should check it out! Great sessions on #data management, preservation, ethics, & more.
Iβve noticed an uptick in dismissals of the concerns of teachers about AI. Some say that itβs *their* job to find a way to evaluate work that AI canβt replicate. I would just ask that you talk to real teachers and really listen. Iβd also suggest reading a bit about writing and the brain.
Whoa!
Oh man, what a self-own. A govt lawyer brought up DEI in passing, Judge Young was Not Happy:
"If putting these words together, DEI, is somehow offensive... does that mean our policy is homogeneity, inequity, and exclusion?
Are you going to stand there and tell me that's now the policy of the NIH?"
Wanna reduce crime?

Update: Reddit the platform is considering legal action against the researchers, their university has stated that their ethics review did NOT actually tell them that the research was okay, and the researchers are not publishing the work. www.404media.co/reddit-issui...
This is one of the worst violations of research ethics I've ever seen. Manipulating people in online communities using deception, without consent, is not "low risk" and, as evidenced by the discourse in this Reddit post, resulted in harm.
Great thread from Sarah, and I have additional thoughts. π§΅
The mods of r/ChangeMyView shared the sub was the subject of a study to test the persuasiveness of LLMs & that they didn't consent. Thereβs a lot that went wrong, so hereβs a 𧡠unpacking it, along with some ideas for how to do research with online communities ethically. tinyurl.com/59tpt988
