Uruguay’s Renewable Charge: A Small Nation, A Big Lesson For The World Uruguay built a power grid that runs 99% on renewablesβ€”at half the cost of fossil fuels. Here’s how its bold energy overhaul became a global model.

β€œUruguay did what most nations still call impossible: it built a power grid that runs almost entirely on renewablesβ€”at half the cost of fossil fuels. The physicist who led that transformation says the same playbook could work anywhereβ€”if governments have the courage to change the rules.”

It was nice to reflect on the past 20 years of my involvement with #fnirs in Latin America, and Brazil in particular!

Thanks to @annadevor.bsky.social and Neurophotonics for such a special issue, and @edgarguevara.bsky.social for taking the lead on this text and inviting me to contribute!

Grateful for all discussions with Robert Luke, @mayucel.bsky.social, and @avonluh.bsky.social over the past years to make this idea a research project.

Big thanks to all coauthors who dedicated their time and volunteered to make this project a reality!

A brief summary:

38 fNIRS teams analyzed the same data.
➑️ No 2 pipelines alike
➑️ Despite diversity, teams showed high agreement at the group level --> fNIRS is reliable
➑️ GLM, short-channel regression = more reproducible outcomes
➑️ Reproducibility also linked to fNIRS experience + SNR

One of the hardest - and most rewarding - papers I've published so far!

Proud to share the FRESH initiative results published in @commsbio.nature.com - a true landmark in fNIRS collaboration and wake-up call on fNIRS data analysis.
