Heinz Watties restructure will have ripple effect, Employers and Manufacturers Association says
The company wants to shut its plants in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin and stop the production of a number of products.
Concerns over NZ's food security
A group representing commercial vegetable growers said food security could become a problem if Heinz Watties goes ahead with a proposal to shut down three factories.

Important to note as well, that is with enacting some of the most punitive restrictions to try and remove people from the benefit wherever they can.
So the actual figures of people needing support are likely higher.

I did not expect this government's terrible idea to bite them on the ass so quickly and thoroughly, but it is darkly humourous #nzpol

The managed to make welfare harder to get and still put more people on it by deliberately destroying the job market. This level of sabotage is actually hard to imagine and yet Nats achieve it every time they are in government because they never face any real consequences.

I'm glad we went through all that pain from austerity and cost-cutting for fucking nothing. Just like every other time it's been tried by every other government. At some point we're going to need a government that is going to invest in the people that live here.

Headline reads "The Covid immunity cycle: Why catching the virus is basically our new booster" below picture of glived hands preparing a wooden syringe or something honestly the picture is weird I can't even tell what it's meant to represent
Dangerously stupid headline.
(It implies catching Covid is a neutral alternative option to getting a booster. It is not).

Has this muppet govt reconsidered their LNG plans at all? Or are they really that much smarter than everyone else that they still know best. ๐

Sometimes self awareness of privilege really sucks (obviously itโs actually a good thing).
I hope you have other moments of pleasure/support to keep you going until you get a good coffee again

An astrophysicist in a black T-shirt is pictured photographing quite the most spectacularly colourful sunset in some time. We take our atmospherics very seriously around here.
Further down the beach, the sunset sky even more fiery than before, reflecting blood-red on the water and the wet sand. Could be Mars, is just Pt Chev on a random Wednesday.
โI do like living on a planet with an atmosphere!โ

A corker of a sunset in broad lurid pink and orange streaks against the last blue of the day - the colours reflected back by the beach at low tide, for double the impact.
A fella in silhouette attempting to photograph tonightโs glorious sunset: to the left, long ripples of brilliant orange clouds, radiating from where the sun has just dipped below the horizon; to the right, a more demure mix of pink and purple-grey fluffy stuff.
Sunset washing out, now just a long low smear of salmon outlining the hills, and matching underlighting on the edges of the clouds above, with everything else fading into blue and greyโฆ all reflected in the wet sand of a low-tide beach. Intermittent lights of cars and houses along the horizon, like glow worms.
Meanwhile at the north end of the beach, where the sky is still a fluffy quilt of pink and blue, lads are being lads and setting off fireworks to and from the pontoon, stranded at low tide. In the background, the โpointโ of Point Chevalier (Rangi-mata-rau), sandstone cliffs held together by gnarly old pลhutukawa and topped by rickety old pines.
Someone had the paintbox out tonightโฆ ๐จ

If your funding agency mandates OA publication (fair enough), but grant amounts go down or stay static while overheads go up, there's no way even medium size grants can justify this cost. What ECR these days can afford this costs? Yet funders & institutes want high impact work, high impact papers.

The sky over the Waitฤkere ranges looks like it's on fire - yellow in the centre and orange to the sides and above, with long streaking clouds.
Amazing sky in Tฤmaki Makaurau an hour or so ago :-) #Kikorangi

The immune system is not a muscle.
It is a cleansing fire.
It causes collateral damage.
It has a limited supply of fuel.
It can get out of control.
Donโt burn your whole house down every time by catching every disease without caution.

Vivid sunset colours catching bands of cloud arranged diagonally across the frame and merging towards the horizon, with a thin strip of silhouetted land beneath. The Waitฤkere Ranges are barely visible in the far distance at lower left.
