Important to note as well, that is with enacting some of the most punitive restrictions to try and remove people from the benefit wherever they can.

So the actual figures of people needing support are likely higher.

I did not expect this government's terrible idea to bite them on the ass so quickly and thoroughly, but it is darkly humourous #nzpol

The managed to make welfare harder to get and still put more people on it by deliberately destroying the job market. This level of sabotage is actually hard to imagine and yet Nats achieve it every time they are in government because they never face any real consequences.

I'm glad we went through all that pain from austerity and cost-cutting for fucking nothing. Just like every other time it's been tried by every other government. At some point we're going to need a government that is going to invest in the people that live here.

A corker of a sunset in broad lurid pink and orange streaks against the last blue of the day - the colours reflected back by the beach at low tide, for double the impact.

Sunset washing out, now just a long low smear of salmon outlining the hills, and matching underlighting on the edges of the clouds above, with everything else fading into blue and grey… all reflected in the wet sand of a low-tide beach. Intermittent lights of cars and houses along the horizon, like glow worms.

Meanwhile at the north end of the beach, where the sky is still a fluffy quilt of pink and blue, lads are being lads and setting off fireworks to and from the pontoon, stranded at low tide. In the background, the “point” of Point Chevalier (Rangi-mata-rau), sandstone cliffs held together by gnarly old pōhutukawa and topped by rickety old pines.

Someone had the paintbox out tonight… 🎨

Wow that’s outrageous

If your funding agency mandates OA publication (fair enough), but grant amounts go down or stay static while overheads go up, there's no way even medium size grants can justify this cost. What ECR these days can afford this costs? Yet funders & institutes want high impact work, high impact papers.

I went really risk averse with my KiwiSaver a few months back, as I don’t have the retirement security I thought I had 😬

The immune system is not a muscle.

Don’t burn your whole house down every time by catching every disease without caution.
