And sadly, almost nobody in the media was paying attention to it. As somebody who has an older sister that worked as USAID contractor, I cannot begin to describe the anguish my sister and her colleagues experienced during that time, while Congress did nothing.

#disability friends, does anyone have suggestions or ideas for resources on disability training centered on what to do if you see ICE? I just got word that ICE raids in Boston are expected to ramp up.

I wish we pushed for research on the political economy of academia more. It's what takes us beyond "oh why did this one person cite a fake journal article?" into "why do we have a system that rewards people who do not engage with prior research and simply churn out pubs?"

Thank you Boston Logan Airport! You just made a service animal handler very happy! #disabilityinclusion

Trump's shutdown of USAID has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths, and the toll will only continue to grow. #Trump #TrumpIsUnfitForOffice #ImpeachTrumpNow #TrumpisaNationalDisgrace #USAID #cruelty #Wiles #depravity

Thread on #USAID. It is so vital to remember USAID and not to forget the role it played on the international stage.

In addition, I sincerely hope that any #Democrat planning to run in the #2026midterms or for president in 2028 will consider doing whatever is possible to restore the agency. The restoration of #USAID should matter to everyone. 7/7

While numerous important issues deserve media attention, I strongly encourage everyone this holiday to remember the significance of #USAID. 6/7

Since then, coverage of #USAID, the jobs lost, and the people who have died as a result of the agency's dismantling has died down. It feels almost as though we have been forgotten by the mainstream media and, in some instances, by the public. 5/7

There are not enough words to express the pain and anguish that my family, along with so many others, experienced not only during those early days of Trump's presidency but also continue to do so almost 10 months later. 4/7

Those two weeks btwn being furloughed and laid off were some of the most difficult, if not frustrating, weeks. While my sister and her colleagues tried to sound the alarm and desperately pleaded with Congress to help save #USAID, almost no one did anything or listened until it was too late. 3/7

This year has been like a domino effect that started on January 24, 2025, the day that my sister, who worked as a #USAID federal contractor, was furloughed from her job. Less than two weeks later, she lost not only a job but her entire career in an instant with a swipe of a pen. 2/7

As we wind down for the holidays, I cannot help but reflect on how difficult a year this has been for everyone in so many areas. For my family and me, this challenging year has hit us from all sorts of different angles. 1/7

I was not planning on responding to this post, but let me say this. Responses like this are exactly why we are still in this mess. When we refuse to express empathy, we lose our capacity for compassion. Lastly, when we lose both of those things then we miss out in our chance towards peace.

Since the 10/7 attacks, my life as a Jew along with many other Jews around the world has not been the same. I’ve faced virulent antisemitism from both the left and right and today’s shooting in Sydney just feels like the final nail in the coffin for me.

Usually, I’m like, “Don’t people know that the social sciences are important? Some of our best elected leaders have degrees in the social sciences.” STEM is absolutely critical, but let’s remember the social sciences as well b/c our work matters. 2/2

I was literally just discussing this today w/a friend, as somebody who is in the social sciences (social policy to be exact), it feels like we are getting the short end of the stick. On so many fronts, I am seeing colleges and ppl, “be like let’s do away with the social sciences!” 1/2

I sometimes question Republicans in Congress who have MDs, why did they even become doctors in the first place…

05.12.2025 20:08 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

If anything in some instances the HHS secretary does NOT even know anything about accessibility. At one of my previous institutions, the president was the former HHS secretary and had no idea that there were NO such thing as registration papers or certificates of service animals.

One of the accommodations, she denied was a note-taker and instead recommended I use a recording pen for note-taking, which I pointed out to her was not ideal for a deaf student who also has visual impairments. 🤷🏼‍♀️

That @theatlantic.com article made me cringe so hard, especially when one of the ppl quoted was a service provider who denied me all of my accommodations over ten years ago, when I was deciding btwn 2 different colleges.

Fear of the Disability Con: Perceptions of Fraud and Special Rights Discourse on JSTOR Doron Dorfman, Fear of the Disability Con: Perceptions of Fraud and Special Rights Discourse, Law & Society Review, Vol. 53, No. 4 (DECEMBER 2019), pp. 1051-1091

If you are reading that article that thinks too many students get accommodations & feeling like maybe it has a point, you should instead read @dorfmandoron.bsky.social's "Fear of the Disability Con" (www.jstor.org/stable/45284...).

As somebody who was born and raised in the suburban Atlanta area, all I can say is that this is amazing! The #democraticparty needs to take note of this and that the Deep South is an area to be watched.

Even by the standards of The Atlantic, this is an extraordinarily weak evidence base for an article.

Data from a tiny handful of schools that isn't measuring the variable at issue and a few thin, secondhand anecdotes.

Lastly, one of the ppl quoted was one of the service providers who denied me my accommodations over a decade ago, when I was deciding btwn two different colleges for undergrad. Publications like @theatlantic.com need to do better in including disabled voices. 6/6

The author fails to recognize both of these critical components for accessibility in #highered. Articles like this are harmful to disabled students in higher education. #disabledinhighered 5/6
