A health check for #kakapo chick Tiwhiri-A3 two nights ago. This is a genetically valuable (rank = gold) chick, so it gets more frequent health checks. It’s doing well. #kakapo2026 #conservation #parrots

Wow Carl! I thought you weren’t in Aotearoa for that long, but your photos put many of us who live here to shame! Congrats on some beautiful shots.

Good question. We couldn’t have done most of our work if they weren’t so tolerant. Fostering eggs and chicks had likely doubled the population.

One of the main measures we use to assess the health of #kakapo chicks is their weight. Tiwhiri-A3 and Tiwhiri-A4 are well above the mean expected for their age, so mother Tiwhiri is doing a great job feeding two chicks. #kakapo2026 #conservation #parrots

You know that feeling when you're struggling to stay awake? #kakapo chicks Tiwhiri-A3 and Tiwhiri-A4 in Tiwhiri's nest on Pukenui/Anchor Island. Both around two weeks old, and doing well. #kakapo2026 #conservation #parrots

Let me start a belated thread of Aotearoa New Zealand silvan birds.

When assessing #kakapo chicks we weigh them, check their respiration rate and hydration. We usually do this twice in the first four days (this chick is less than a day old), and then every 5-7 days. The frequency of checks depends on their genetic priority. #kakapo2026 #conservation #parrots

Female #kakapo are utterly focussed on their chicks. Stella came back to the nest while I was checking her very young chicks two nights ago. Apparently unconcerned by me being there, she jumped in and started brooding them in front of me. #conservation #parrots #birds #kakapo2026

Exciting times on Anchor Island as we check #kakapo nests for hatching. We’re letting eggs hatch in nests to reduce management intensity. Last night I found these two newly-hatched chicks in Konini’s nest, along with a fertile egg I carried back under a lunar eclipse. #kakapo2026 #conservation

Bad news: a few egg deaths in the last couple of days.

We trying to have most #kakapo chicks hatch in nests on Pukenui, so don't have many eggs in the incubators. But there are ~4 which we're incubating and will put in nests just before they hatch. The Anchor chicks are due to start hatching soon - watch this space! #kakapo2026 #conservation
