Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War A statement from our CEO on national security uses of AI

⚠️ Anthropic:

β€œWe cannot in good conscience accede” to the demands of the Department of War.

Concerns about the Department’s potential use of AI for mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons have not been resolved.

I would be so good at this. This is such good bait.

This is well put. So *many* technologies are joyous and progressive. The web was invented in a PUBLICLY FUNDED UNIVERSITY! It is, in fact, an aberration that the fascist VCs think they're the default with their approach to tech. They were only ever supposed to be a tiny fraction of the ecosystem.

I say this as someone who has strong leftist values and also works with and plays with LLMs.

The answer as ever is β€œwell it’s complicated and there are real issues that we must choose how to engage with.”

Personally to me β€œprogress” would be more a rise of local models outside of investor capture.

As a passing observer here, I’d like to offer the perspective that β€œdevelopment of LLMs” is not necessarily β€œprogress”.

Progress can be measured along any axis. Investor-captured technological progress often encodes a conservation of extant power dynamics.

So in that sense, pro-AI is conservative.

As someone who was tortured in ABA over autism this push is pretty obviously about cleaving off a subset of the population to do more of that too. Or otherwise throw away. So 1) I don’t support it & 2) they said I had severe autism in childhood and so I still assert that label now to make a point

Anyone on my network familiar with social supports in Canada, specifically in Edmonton, where a disabled autistic guy might turn for help? He’s about to lose housing and internet access. He’s brilliant but physically hurt, and he’s about to be on the street in this winter.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

it's wild how big tech forced technology on us that
* doesn't work the way they say it does
*most people are ill-equipped to use, and
* induces psychosis in otherwise stable individuals
And all anyone ever says is "better get used to it, it's here to stay"

I'm speaking, of course, about printers

Wonderman is an autistic-coded work of art exploring the loneliness of giving a shit in a world that doesn’t, and telling a story about what it’s like to be hard-wired against defection.

I really loved it a lot.

In 2022 I started tracking changes in how news outlets were describing trans people, and set up a bot to record every article pushed to the Google News index based on a handful of search phrases, including β€œbiological sex” in both the US and UK. The amount in 2023 alone was absolutely staggering.

This is awesome and my mind immediately goes to, can we apply this concept to navigation in semantic latent spaces. Ima chew on this for a bit, thanks!

Answering earnestly:
Make time for Joy! Joy is a powerful weapon.

Some people will break down. Most won't.

I keep pointing out that what cops do to Black folk is measurably 10x to 100x worse than what ICE does to immigrants. And yet, we are still here.

"Strong Black woman!" is survivorship bias.

Fearful Asymmetry
A collection of writings exploring a specific view into complexity. The essays here will touch on dynamic systems, math and cellular automata, software engineering and philosophy. I've got this... shape? In my head. It's too big to just name it, but enough of it has finally breached the surface that I think I can start to taxonomize it.
We're going to touch on everything from Taoism to Cybernetics; from Joyce to Kojima; from Cellular Automata to Quantum Mechanics. If I can stick the landing, I'd like to create a body of work that taken together gestures at something that's simply too large to describe directly - but I think I've finally got enough of the moving parts identified that between them I can at least start to sketch out the shape.
This is an experiment. I don't know if I'll succeed. At a minimum, though, I hope to at least provide enough thoughtful musing that a certain kind of mind won't regret the time spent reading it.
I'd love your company on the journey, to hear your thoughts as I try to lay this stuff out, and for us to collaborate on the Borgesian task of identifying the thing that so many of us can see but so few of us can describe.
