I have found that working with kids has made me a lot more willing to be bad at things, but I have to also be careful to remind then (and myself) that nobody gets better by not trying again ...

So I got myself one of those miniature watercolor sets (because smol) and got a book about the basics and watched a couple of videos ("10 things I wish I knew before I started" &c) and now I'm just taking a few minutes at a time to fuck around with shapes and varying the amount of water ... +

She actually enjoyed sewing a lot, and she often made special-occasion clothes for me and my sister, but yeah, the yardage of trim on those dresses was mind-boggling.

In HS (1980's), the big thing was Gunne Sax dresses (tons of lace & ribbons & pin-tucks, etc) and the storebought ones didn't go up to my size BUT my mom found sewing patterns and made me a full-length princess dress in white with violets and pansies sprigged all over and I loved it SO MUCH.
