there's a push from conservative institutionalists at the Wall Street Journal editorial page today to....... extend the war even at the risk of a crisis in the energy markets www.wsj.com/opinion/iran...

A useful reminder that capitalism pretends to be an efficient system of market information but is just a bunch of courtiers chasing after imperial power.

There was always going to come the moment when the opinions of the Jewish community would have to be misrepresented because they are not in line anymore with the community institutions which claim to represent them.

It isn't a betrayal of one's progressive values to witness members of a country's diaspora dancing in the street and rejoicing at news of their home nation being bombed or the slaughter of hundreds of their compatriots, and question the goodness of their intentions or clarity of their moral compass.

To this day the only MP aside from the PM where I know what their house looks like is Jeremy Corbyn

This didn't happen. The perception that it did is largely based on fictional shows that were about rich people. Much more common was a household where one person (theoretically Dad in a het household) was the higher earner and paid the housing costs and the other paid utilities & food

This is why I say jailing Harvey Weinstein sent all of these guys crazy. It set an unacceptable precedent that very rich guys can get sent to jail, because they’re accused by people who don’t matter.

These guys actually looked at *Winsome Earle-Sears* and said β€œyeah, I would like to run that campaign, too”

the median case - which most macro economists will give you, including me - is about +0.25%pt PCE, -0.25%pt GDP growth. (hey, I do macro, we like round numbers)

so, a $60/bbl increase is +1.5%pt to inflation, -1.5%pt to real GDP growth. at last print, PCE is currently 4.7% YoY, real GDP is 2.2% YoY

so there's a rough [set of] rule of thumb in Economics on the relation between oil and inflation/growth.

for every $10 increase in the price of WTI:
-the fed [optimists] generally assumes +0.1%pt CPI, -0.1%pt real GDP growth
-most of the oil industry [pessimists] are +0.4%pt CPI, -0.33%pt [GDP]

"...these arguments have become implausibly detached from the legal & factual context in which [I/Goodwin] were decided. They fail to take seriously the increasingly serious incursions on the privacy rights of trans people that are likely to occur if the trans-exclusionary interpretation prevails"

9 days in, the most basic question about the Iran war remains unanswered In just over a week, Trump and top administration officials have given at least 17 different responses about why the war began

WE STILL DON'T HAVE A CLEAR ANSWER ON THE MOST BASIC QUESTION ABOUT THE IRAN WAR

WHY did the U.S. go to war?

A Popular Information review of public statements over the last 9 days found 17 DIFFERENT EXPLAINATIONS. Many of which contradict each other.

"For the next phase of my career, I look forward to some independence and finding new spaces to share my work in line with my personal goals."

Another CBS News journalist leaving and talking about independence. Bit of a not-so-subtle hint at what's happening over there.

A trans person drawing on a statue with chalk got comment from the Home Secretary and coverage on TV and in all the main papers.

A female Green MP being harassed and abused in the street by transphobes gets nothing...

I’m briefly in India. This is a facile observation, but Americans have barely scratched the surface in understanding how the rest of the world is reacting to this war. It’s already an Iraq War-style disaster in the global imagination, underscored by the thuggishness and caprice of the Trump approach

You’d think in this era of β€œMPs face increasing danger” there would be more outrage at newly elected Green MP Hannah Spencer being assaulted by transphobes but it’s nowhere to be seen on BBC News app even if you search her name

Israel and the US appear to want to do to Tehran what they have done to Gaza: reduce a busy and complex society to a toxic wasteland.

This war will make the world poorer How the US–Israel war on Iran is about to push up prices, crash growth, and deepen the global cost-of-living crisis.

Energy price spikes can be catastrophic because they limit the amount the global economy is able to produce. They make the whole planet poorer.

And the default response from central banks – raise interest rates – only makes the situation worse.

I'm told some Labour MPs are unhappy with this latest act of hostility towards trans people being blamed on Streeting. That feels silly or naΓ―ve. It's happening because Wesley kept in place in the NHS, indeed encouraged, the ideologues that Kemi Badenoch *told us* she introduced to key positions.

For all my criticism of Sanchez, he is head and shoulders above just about any other European leader tbh, strategically and politically.

The question of whether the left in Spain (to the left of the PSOE) can get their shit together is the other principal question for coming years.

I mean this is the bottom line: there really isn’t a good way to meaningfully ban children from accessing social media without requiring all users to use real, government ID on all social networks
