We are deeply grateful to our funders for their continued support including @wellcometrust.bsky.social, @royalsociety.org, @ukri.org , @worldwidecancer.bsky.social, Guts UK Charity, @cancerresearchuk.org, @erc.europa.eu.
Immense gratitude to the whole team who worked tirelessly to make this happen, especially our fantastic collaborators Ayesha Noorani, Sebastian Zeki, Jozsef Jaszai, Yiteng Dang, @rulands.bsky.social, Phil Jones, Ben D. Simons and many others.
π¬ Remarkably, this niche alone can induce tumour-like properties in otherwise normal epithelial cells.
π When we blocked tumourβstromal communication, far fewer early tumours persisted.
πΆββοΈπΆββοΈ Surviving features are in human tumours opening new avenues for early detection π and prevention.
β‘ Surviving early tumours activate a stress response that mobilises fibroblasts. 𧱠These cells remodel the extracellular matrix, building a fibronectin-rich βpre-cancerous nicheβ β a wound-healing programme gone rogue β that supports tumour growth and survival.
𧬠We all accumulate mutations as we age β yet most emerging lesions are eliminated. So why do some escape?
Our study shows that the earliest tumourβstroma interactions determine whether abnormal cell clusters are cleared or allowed to persist long term.
