People like to say feedback is a gift and so like to remind them that the Trojan Horse was also a gift.
the former maintainers of Bundler and RubyGems have a proposal: we want to move Ruby forward andre.arko.net/2025/10/26/w...
I’m pretty sure all the apps like old school Caffeine, amphetamine, keeping you awake, all of them use the built in caffeinate under the hood. Personally I like keeping you awake because I can use it at work without App Store, so my setup scripts install it along with other brew formulas
Personally I use lists heavily so I can have Ruby/professional feed, and a sports feed, and be able to read them in peace and right mental space. I don’t really know what to do about following although I rarely look at that feed. Maybe I should follow everyone in my lists then?
@martinemde.com I have some questions around switching to gem.coop (prep for corporate questioning me), is there a good non-public avenue to ask them? (Sorry to tag you specifically but you’re active here)
A generational fumble by Ruby Central is now complete.
Anyway, I'm happy that the people who disagreed decided to get up and Do Something By Coding. I love to see that and can 100% get behind it 👍
announcing a new community-focused gem server from the team previously behind rubygems: gem.coop. join us and start using it today!
I'm excited to join my friends in announcing gem.coop, a new ruby community gem server that you can use right now.
I would like to think that would be good incentive for not taking actions that damage the community but here we are
What is the actual context? This is mostly a confirmation that some people don’t like Andre, with all the information coming from 3rd parties (who could be the original people who don’t like Andre?)
DHH on his blog: "The last loonies on tech's woke island are getting desperate. It used to be that a wide variety of baseless accusations of racism, misogyny, or white supremacy could inflict grave social and professional consequences for the accused, but that's no longer true. So now they've had to up the ante, and that's why everyone is suddenly a nazi to these people."
"im not a nazi! im not a nazi!!", i continue to insist as i slowly shrink and transform into a nazi.
After listening to about a dozen first-hand accounts, I’ve published what I know about the RubyGems takeover.
Not to mention that the biggest barrier would be funding. And the idea that 4 dudes starting a consulting side hustle are really competing with Shopify funding is a pretty tough sell
Following that line of thinking, what should they have done with rv? Build it and bill RC for that time? Never try to come up with new ideas/improvements? There’s no reasonable answer. Building rv on the side is bet good for community, and it could always move into RC umbrella if successful
My favorite part is how with 24 hours to go, nuclear blast was an option, but picking up the phone to ask for an extension wasn’t. *if* there wasn’t pressure to do the blast…
Thinking like search engines processing slugs and doing analysis on them. Seems like the indexing would be more accurate, or maybe it’s far more advanced than I understand
Would be intrigued to hear more/follow along as you figure that out. Maybe a good podcast episode?
I think removing is more sensible (human thinking) but wouldn’t removing also be more logical for text indexing?
What would that look like? Instructions to source directly from GitHub instead of Rubygems? Or a step further? GitHub only seems marginally safer from (various) issues due to Microsoft restructuring
It’s hard to believe this is not nefarious, following so soon after having DHH keynote the conference he killed off, clearly without much discussion or consideration of the community.
Open request to Ruby/Rails/tech podcasters: How about not booking DHH anymore. There are lots of new and interesting people to hear from who aren't nazis. #RubyLang #RubyOnRails #RubyFriends
I was a speaker at that Houston one, traveling 2 states over, and I contemplated backing out. Certainly did not feel good about it
DHH posting on the Nazi Bar social network: "First-world problems" shouldn't be seen as an insult, but a celebration! Hurraaaay, I have ascended from the daily toils and tribulations of a life in the third world, so my worries may now include slow laundry machines and air conditioning, not starvation or failed states 🎉
Rails World attendees:
This is the man whose ideas you are celebrating this week.
Shame on you.
Shame. On. You.

Winners ship. Losers debate.
Awesome thanks Nate. We were on Ruby 2.7 at the time and ran into issues using LD_PRELOAD so we ended up adding some introspection to be able to verify. Definitely went through that “thought we had it” process
What would constitute incorrectly? When we switched over, our checks were just yes/no. Is there additional tuning we should test? We saw massive improvements instantly similar to what’s been blogged about the last few years
AI tools are a mirage for coding productivity. What you're actually doing is diluting your own knowledge of the codebase and making yourself irrelevant over time.

The changes to dirty API were such a headache when I did 4.2 to 5.0 on our monolith
