Voting has begun in our School-wide Humor Award competition! K/1 Ss are choosing their favorites on paper and 2-5 Ss are creating voting poster after digitally reviewing the contenders.

I’ll share poster examples and our big voting bulletin board soon.

I had a great time talking with Steve about an idea gained at the @aaslala.bsky.social conference in October. It resulted in a whole school shared experience that brought the community into our school and focused us all on literacy and Black History Month!

I LOVE this! I have several β€œdead” graphic novels sitting on a back shelf right now. I was also just thinking that I need to do a β€œParts of a Graphic Novel” lesson again and get us familiar with panels, gutters, speech vs. thought bubbles, etc. This would fit so well into that.
Thank you!!!

Most are incredibly excited, so I am spending my time with a few of Ss who are a bit more reticent. Touching base on book choices and kid pairings with our ELL and SPED staff as well to set every student up for success! πŸ’ͺ 😊

At the end of our library classes this week 3rd, 4th, & 5th graders are selecting a book to read with their younger buddy for our big event next week. The Goldilocks comparison of choosing a title with not-too-few words and not-too-many words is resonating.

I LITERALLY pulled What I Am off the shelf today for our upcoming Students Rebuild lessons! It is so validating thinking of the same book as someone as well-read as you, Wendy.

Right?!? In hindsight it was so fascinating to watch him work through how to describe it without having the word β€˜accent’ in his vocabulary yet.

Equally interesting was the next pressing question: β€œBut where in the book does it tell you to do that?”

Thanks, Martha; these are great!

To be fair, I do smear it IMMEDIATELY after writing to mimic well, the real world conditions for only some of my students. πŸ˜†

I’m betting others could let their writing dry. 🀞🏻

I’ve started testing different writing utensils on it to gauge their level of smear.

Question for the #TLSky & #SchoolLibraries Hive:

The office knows I’ll take ANY spare paper (mostly for our student author section), so the nurse asked if I wanted this stack (yes, please!).

The paper is thick and slick and I just know there’s a great teaching idea in here somewhere. Thoughts?

S: β€œWhen it was the owl talking you made the noise!”

Me: β€œOh! You mean the (wildly inconsistent British) accent!”

S: β€œHow did you know to make that noise?”

Thus ensued a fun convo about making choices when you read aloud and differentiating between characters. Unplanned, but SO delightful!

Easily THE best part of reading this pair for our school-wide humor award - student asks β€œHow did you make that noise in the book?”

Me: β€œThe snoring sound at the end?”

S: β€œNo, the noise to made through the whole book.”

….at least 60 more seconds of figuring this out…

Looking at plenty of examples and non-examples before they are charged with selecting their own title.

Book crates will be delivered to classrooms the day before so Ss can practice reading aloud to a peer.

We're doing work in their library time on what the "right" amount of text is for a read-aloud to a younger S - not wordless, not too much, find that book that's juuuuuuust right for you to read.

Doing some prep work today for an upcoming Buddy Reading event. 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade Ss will pick out their read-alouds in library class, then we'll store them until the event (trying to make this as easy on grade-level Ts as possible).

I’d not thought about this nonfiction connection for February; great idea! ⭐️

You are confirming EVERY hesitation I have with the ballot boxes sitting in my cabinet gathering dust and not getting use….and you teach OLDER STUDENTS.

Love that this activity has the added benefit of matching the pictures of planets with their written names!

In week 2 of our school-wide humor award I realized that we had a fun coincidence happening in two of our contenders. We briefly talked about it in 4th & 5th grade. Hoping it is a good, small introduction to the concept for Ss.

Personally, I was thrilled that all readers showed up (we had backups), the schedule worked, and the slides displayed correctly showing the creators of each book during the read-aloud. I'm feeling very grateful to have an administrator and coworkers who were willing to take a chance on a new event.

I sent out an anonymous feedback form and reviews have been very positive. Several teachers have caught me in the halls to say their students really enjoyed the event as well and they hope it becomes a tradition at our school (me too!).

We had education students from our local university, high school student ambassadors from our district, and employees from our district office come to read. It was a wonderful event celebrating Black History Month, literacy, and community.

We had an OUTSTANDING first African American Read-In yesterday! Every classroom in our school was treated to read-alouds of two books by Black authors and illustrators.
