I mostly end up using the general use lanes on that stretch of northbound Park because the bike lane is so routinely blocked. Replace the angled parking with parallel parking.

Two lane road with bike lane on both sides. Small parking enforcement vehicle next to an SUV parked partially in a driveway and partially on the sidewalk and bike lane.
First time seeing SD parking enforcement ticket someone for blocking the sidewalk and bike lane! On 30th Street just south of Switzer Canyon
CA's prohousing caucus has thrown down gauntlet: No more CEQA, period, for any housing project on an infill site (up to 20 acres!) that complies with applicable general plan & zoning standards.
A decisive break w/ "everything bagel" tradition!

A new state bill from @scottwiener.bsky.social would allow lots of new homes near transit stations.
Follow me on Instagram too! @jakegotta
Too bad the bike lane also seems to have disappeared in that time π
California spends billions on transit, all while banning apartments nearby.
SB 79 ends this contradiction by allowing more home choices within a half a mile of high-quality transit. π§΅/4
A screenshot of text followed by an image. The text says "Although this location is designated on MTS bus route maps as the βKearny Mesa Transit Centerβ, it is not a formal transit center similar to stations operated at Otay Mesa, UTC, or many of MTSβs trolley stations. Instead, the current βtransit centerβ consists of bus stops located on City streets along Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Complex Drive." The image is a satellite view of the area around Clairemont Mesa Blvd and Complex Dr. There is a red circle around the property at the southwestern corner of the street. There are 6 blue circles dotted around the intersection of the two streets.
A satellite view of the area around Clairemont Mesa Blvd and Complex Dr. The background is greyed out and color diagrams overlay the property at the southwestern corner of the intersection. The diagrams show how the property could be converted to a transit center with several bus bays. There are bays labeled for routes 20, 25, 27, 43, 44, 120, 235, 928, and future bus routes. The diagram also shows where a small retail shop and restrooms would be located. The caption says there would be 18 bus bays.
Some good transit news, MTS Board will likely vote to buy the vacant property at the intersection of Clairemont Mesa Blvd and Complex Dr to build an actual Kearny Mesa Transit Center.
Balboa desperately needs a bike path connection between the separate bike lanes on 4th/5th and Park. I cut through here a couple times a week. Close El Prado and improve pedestrian and bike infrastructure π―
I would love to invite the traffic engineers that worked on "traffic calming" at the intersection of Fern & Grape to spend just 10-15 minutes observing the efficacy of their interventions so they can see how 90% of drivers treat this new striped area as a right turn lane
"There were 18 that occurred during nighttime hours. Twelve incidents were βattributed to drivers operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs,β six incidents involved excessive speed, and 10 involved vehicles βstriking fixed objects, such as signs or streetlight poles.β" And no one died.
Today was a HUGE day for Hillcrest! We officially broke ground on the Pride Promenade, a project that will create a welcoming, pedestrian-friendly space for everyone.

State street December this year apparently
My most radicalizing experience in planning school was learning about affordable housing finance.
Describing the system for funding affordable housing as βincredibly time-intensive, costly, and inefficientβ is putting it very politely.
This article isnβt the standard pearl-clutching from Clairemont or University City homeowners and raises important points. Loosening zoning is necessary but not sufficient. It wonβt pave their street, add sidewalks, or make their bus better than 30min peak/60min offpeak. www.kpbs.org/news/racial-...
San Diego's City Council seems intent on rolling back what is likely the most expansive pro-ADU law in California:

I appreciate the restriping of the bike lanes on Montezuma with a buffer.
Iβd also appreciate if the city actually kept the bike lane clear of vegetation.
And Iβm wondering if/when the rest of the flex posts will be installed.
Got word from a SD traffic engineer that a light & ped crossing at El Cajon & Mississippi is funded and under design. Hopefully that means less people choosing between playing frogger or going several blocks out of their way to cross
The first draft of the college area community plan update is out:
- most single family areas left untouched, upzoning mostly confined to arterials (but still up to 27000 new homes apparently)
- bus lanes on parts of ECB and college
- road diet and promenade along part of montezuma
- new bike lanes
A map showing MTS bus routes 1, 10, and 11 detouring away from University Ave via Richmond St, Robinson Ave, and Park Blvd. This detour is active on Sundays from 5:00am to 5:30pm throughout the remainder of calendar year 2025. The map indicates riders should use the following stops: Route 1 to La Mesa: University & Richmond or Park & University Route 1 to Fashion Valley: Park and University or University and Vermont Route 11 to SDSU: University and Richmond or Park and University Route 11 to Downtown: Park and University or University and Vermont Route 10 to I-15: University and Vermont or the route 7 stop at Park and University Route 10 to Old Town: University and Vermont or the route 7 stop at Park and University More detailed descriptions here: https://www.sdmts.com/getting-around/alerts-detours
The Farmers Market in Hillcrest is going to move to University Ave during the Normal St Promenade construction. I personally find it difficult to parse multi-route detour notices that are in text only, so I made a map.
Caltrans could make its overcrossings so much more bike-friendly by just filling in the paint-only bike lanes with concrete, effectively extending the sidewalk and turning it into a multiuse path.
There's usually not even any drainage to move, a typical barrier to widening sidewalks!
Everyone deserves to feel safe. Whether walking, on a bike, or in a car, public safety is a universal need. We can do better to look at the low-cost, quick options so our community can experience the benefits sooner. TY to @acbowen.bsky.social for your reporting.

For more than a decade, SANDAG has been planning to build protected bike lanes on a deadly stretch of University Ave from La Mesa to City Heights. But the project suffered a big setback when construction bids came in over budget.
My latest: www.kpbs.org/news/environ...
Development is going to happen and change will occur. Iβm glad that at least the benefit of this development is highlighted as well as the opposing view. Valid points on both sides. www.cbs8.com/article/news... #housing #infrastructure #development
Headline: bicyclist collides with car
Actual story: Driver hits bicyclist with car
I wrote SANDAG GObyBike and they still claim construction is expected in early 2025. Either they have old information or this is just a temporary delay
SANDAG staff tell me the three bids they received were deemed non-responsive to the request (though it's unclear why). They plan on putting the project out to bid again sometime next year.
Trying to get more info on this!
I just found out (12/18/24) SANDAG had indefinitely postponed the University Bikeway.
Wtf. Literally the most glaring gap in uptown's bike network
They always say "I'm a cyclist, too." It's an interesting rhetorical move: the attempt to relate to someone after obviously disregarded them youtu.be/35JfFmROm6c
According to San Diego nimbys, seventeen lanes of freeway isn't a blight, but a midrise apartment building right next to it is
