main goal for this year: find a new job! π
looking for a role with fun & complex technical challenges & within a great community. my main expertise is in signal processing/EEG/MEG, but topic-wise I am quite flexible.
science/industry both great! starting mid-year. nschawor.github.io/cv
New paper by @avbarchet.bsky.social from Gesa Hartwigsenβs group, @jonasobleser.bsky.social @ae.mpg.de @mpicbs.bsky.social We suggest attentional filtering during comprehension requires target enhancement and distractor suppression at different hierarchical levels

Interested in doing a PhD with me and lacns.github.io? Or with any of the incredible fellows in the IMPRS School of Cognition www.maxplanckschools.org/cognition-en - apply before Dec 1st at cognition.maxplanckschools.org/en/application
Our latest preprint! We find that auditory-motor synchronization behavior is related to the weighting of rhythmic versus melodic predictions during music perception, including long-term enculturated predictions. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
exciting! this was fun to be part of! thank you @ckeitelsci.bsky.social @annekeitel.bsky.social @satupalva.bsky.social @paulsauseng @sonjakotz for making it happen π€
/1 We took our sweet time (~3yrs) to put this into its final shape - but happy to say that the pre-print of an extensive review of brain rhythms in cognition - from a cognruro perspective - is now available. Please let us know what you think. #neuroskyence doi.org/10.48550/arX...
We have a *permanent* position available for a research engineer (ingΓ©nieur de recherche) to work in our new MEG-OPM facility. A strong scientific focus is possible. Speaking French is required. If you're interested, please let me know!
How does the brain track rhythmsβand can we hack it?
In our new study, just published @plosbiology.org, we dive deeper into neural entrainmentβhow the brain synchronizes to rhythms in our environmentβand explore whether transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can modulate this process.
Very happy to see this out! In this work I demonstrate the potential of OPMs for laminar MEG and investigate the impact of factors such as sensor counts, number of measurement axes, co-registration errors, misestimated forward modelsβ¦
Already looking forward to Imaging Neuroscienceβs 2025 collage!
I hope you enjoy some of the ideas I put forward in βMetacognition in the listening brainβ: Trends in Neurosciences www.cell.com/trends/neuro... β out now.
Don't forget to join the βMax Planck Law | Tech | Societyβ Initiative on 28 March for βDemystifying AI Interpretabilityβ. @fedeadolfi.bsky.social will explore neural network explainability for a non-technical audience: law.mpg.de/event/demyst...
π§ In our new article, Martin Meyer & I argue that the lateralization of spoken language is enhanced by top-down processesβsuch as predictive coding and dimension-selective auditory attentionβwhich engage left-lateralized sensorimotor networks.

I'm very happy that this paper by Francecso Mantegna (now Oxford) and Joan Orpella (now Georgetown) is published. Congrats for some heroic data wrangling!

Unusual experiment (mental imagery of speech planning+MEG) shows cool perspective on speech production
β¨i'm hiring a lab manager, with a start date of ~September 2025! to express interest, please complete this google form: forms.gle/GLyAbuD779Rz...
looking for someone to join our multi-disciplinary team, using OPM, EEG, iEEG and computational techniques to study speech and language processing! π§
@andreaeyleen.bsky.social has been awarded a Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council (ERC) for her proposal 'DYNALANG: Integrating structure and statistics in language processing: an ecological neural dynamics and manifolds approach'. Read more on our website: mpi.nl/news/erc-con...
We're hiring! My dept at CCNY is looking to hire a computationally minded cognitive neuroscientist at the Full Professor level. Ad here: cuny.jobs/new-york-ny/.... We'll start reviewing apps soon, but position is open until filled.

Just published with Hugo Weissbart!

Our new study in Nature Communications reveals how the structure and statistics of language work together to shape neural responses during naturalistic language comprehension!

If you are interested in music improvisation and its motor and reward correlates, check our latest paper led by Anna Palumbo: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Our YUGE consensus semantic paper is now out in the world. 50+ authors, hot tears, vicious arguments, shattered dreams -- but through the fire has emerged a glossary of terms/constructs to improve communication and promote incremental theory-building in our field. osf.io/preprints/ps...
Our work on decoding speech using high-density micro-scale recordings was published today in Nature Communications! We demonstrate the potential of high-spatial sampling technology for future neural speech prostheses.

The thread below outlines our main findings.
I ran a workshop on using Empirical Mode Decomposition to analyse oscillations in EEG during #CuttingEEG Frankfurt. I enjoyed the experience the broad discussions afterwards

This was an awesome workshop and cool method! I very much enjoyed it, thank you!
Summary of findings
I'm excited to share our preprint on musical rhythm processing π΅π΅ We show that cortical tracking is influenced by pitch predictability, expertise & enjoyment.
