So sorry for your loss.
So sorry for your loss.
About 15 seconds after I took that picture, the dog haved and vomitted.
A nice concrete terrace with wooden chairs and tables in front of a tropical lake. In the background a large singular flat top hill. A light brown dog with floppy ears sits on the terrace, back to the viewer.
One of the most iconic photos I took on our current trip to Sri Lanka: a dog apparently contemplating about enigmatic Lions Rock in Sigiriya, a natural formation holding a more than 1500 years old fortress and palace of King Kasyapa, illegitimate son who killed his father to become king himself.
Biological Conservation Volume 316, April 2026, 111749 Revisiting Europe's temperate forests: Palaeoecological evidence for an herbivory-driven woodland-grassland mosaic biome
"The study shows that current reforestation practices are on the wrong track—both here in Denmark, where subsidies are only granted for planting dense forests, and elsewhere in Europe. This will not only be harmful for biodiversity; it will be in direct contradiction to the type of ecosystems that Europe's species have evolved in over millions of years," says Professor Jens-Christian Svenning from the Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere (ECONOVO), Department of Biology at Aarhus University, senior author of the study. New study: Europe had MUCH LESS dark dense forests vs today!

"For over 20 million years, the landscape of Europe has been a tree-rich mosaic of grasslands, scrubs and more or less open woodlands with an abundance of wildflowers"

If there is one single reason Archaeology doesn’t need and shouldn’t embrace ai illustrations, it’s his work.
Tom Bjorklund did it again. 👏
Our boy Oskar was diagnosed with severe epilepsy at two, and had seizures repeatedly. We knew that he would not grow old. Nevertheless when his health suddenly deteriorated when he was six, we were not ready, it hit hard. It always will feel sudden, They are family. Fingers crossed for your gal.
Terrible headline (this is NOT what the new research - link below - shows!), terrible AI image! Argh!
Here’s the actual research:

Ok, second text was probably eaten by a gecko: The inscriptions date to the 1. century BC, and are both about 100ms long and one meter in height.
We skipped the second one, as the visitor centre was closed, and we did not wanted to leave our luggage unsupervised.
Modern translation of inscription one on a steel plate.
Another view of the 100 m long inscription 1 carved into rock
More of the inscription, shown inbetween fences, trying to catch its full length, but instead catched my finger
Path along the lakeshore towards inscription 2.

Rock carvings of symbols
Entrance situation of the Thonigala Inscriptions: a reddish brown rock TukTuk stands on a sandy court under a large banyan tree. Left and right are small houses visible.
Location of the inscriptions: a beautiful small valley between grey brown boulders with small trees inbetween, and a large visible at the end of the valley.
Position of inscription one, a reddish brown rock formation, with a black fencing before lush green vegetation.
We’re having an interruption of current doom events, as we are currently traveling in Sri Lanka on my everlasting attempt to fit bits of (prehistoric) archaeology into vacation schedules.
Two days ago, we made a short stop at the Thonigala Rock Inscriptions on our way to Wilpattu National Park.
Different kind of bad. 😅
Well, let’s say I know (very well, and are quite fond of them) the person who found it. Trust me when I tell you that we’re all globally better off with the sword in the museum.

Oh well…

So, if you are an @archaeologyeaa.bsky.social (EAA) member from 2025-2026, you received yesterday your email for the per-rollam vote of the past Special Meeting and the documentation attached to it… if you still doubt what to vote, please read all the documents. My short digest:
I've received my invitation from @archaeologyeaa.bsky.social to vote in the special election stemming from our petition to increase democratic processes in the society and stand with Palestine's colleagues.
If you're a 2025 or 2026 member, please open the email and take the time to vote.
Interesting! There ist still a famous Omani dish called Awal, a salad made with dried shark meat!
Yesterday I resigned from the EAA Appeals & Anti-Harassment Committee (AAHC) after I was targetted in what I believe was an attempt to disprupt & undermine the AAHC. Be assured, AAHC are v much committed to making EAA a safe space, despite the restrictions imposed on them by the existing statutes. 🏺
Variation of the Simpsons-"Don’t Make Me Tap the Sign" meme: A cartoon bus driver at the wheel with caption "DON’T MAKE ME TAP THE SIGN." - Below, a finger pointing to a sign explaining: "Hunter-Gatherer is not a cultural classification, but describes a subsistence mode."
Reminder.
🏺 Fantasic work by our colleagues from @landesmuseumhalle.bsky.social and the army of volunteers: Roman marching camps found. Plural. Not one, but likely THREE!!!
That’s so cool, looking forward to read it!
Gratulation!
The #EAA @archaeologyeaa.bsky.social already closed its comment drop box <24h after the meeting finished. It was already limited to comment on one point on the agenda only, so I'm going to send the remainder of my comments to them per email. This feels like short sighted gagging... #concernedEAA
