Acrylic in an Uglybooks sketchbook. On thin paper like this I get more free and playful, there is less pressure. And watching the image emerge from dark paper is satisfying.
This place was a long hike from the road (20 km) but so worth it. Such perfect weather that weekend.
I just learned I can go see what I liked a while ago - like this one of yours! Iβm starting to embrace acrylics and hope to try it for plein air this summer to avoid the smearing problem. Bike/paint outings are the best!
These are great! Makes me think a bit of Ted Harrison.
This view is on the way home from
Jasper, in that season when there isnβt enough snow yet for skiing, and the days end early.
18x24. Acrylic on birch.

With the new year, I have been thinking about how to align my art practice with my life - amplifying whatβs working, and growing by building on what works.
I wrote a post about it on Substack.

Iβll be joining some very talented local artists like Courtney for a pre-holiday art market, Saturday November 8 at Orange Hall (between the Strathcona Farmers Market and the Library). Hope to see you there!

Another of these 8x10 paintings. Acrylic on paper.
Lately Iβve been really drawn to making these acrylic paintings on dark watercolour paper.
This was a special moment waking up at a campsite near Nordegg. That time of year when the sun seems to get up later and later each day.

Glenbow Ranch. Acrylic on brown paper, 8x10.
Ready for the Cadmium Art Collective show on Nov 8! Iβm testing out having a few of these studies on paper available.

Easter weekend, hiking out of Shadow Lake, on top of the crunchy freeze-thaw snow. The light was dramatically filtering through the trees.
30x30, acrylic on birch panel.

So fitting that itβs called the Daybreak Easel. π Nice job keeping the commitment to art even with the early meetings! So impressive. Do you keep your palette in the fridge/freezer so itβs ready to go in the morning?
Hiked my painting gear the 22 km into the Fryatt Valley over the weekend. What a beautiful spot. Frosty overnight, hot days, and cloudless skies - a rare treat in the Canadian Rockies.

It is acrylic! 30x30 inch on birch.
Oh I would love to hear more from you on that topic (corporate life / art life)!
A little preview of the painting Iβm working on - a 30x30 from a spring ski trip.

Iβm learning a lot - like that I tend to underestimate how much red is in colours, and overestimate how much change is needed for a colour or value shift.
This one took 41 minutes of effort so far. I am hoping my speed will improve with practice.

Part of my ongoing effort to improve my painting skills! For the last few days Iβve been waking up at 6 am to do these little copies of paintings I like.
Maybe challenging but your results are impressive! The way the brightly lit petals jump out, and the brilliance of the sky. So great!!!!
You nailed the greens! Those are so tricky!
I biked across town to paint, then panicked about an approaching storm and biked home. But at least I made this backyard painting of the clouds. I love this SMLT brown paper so much, colours pop on it!

Wow congrats!!! It is a big change, hope that security feels so great! Thanks for posting, helps me to appreciate what I have too.
Here are some of the paintings from the Yoho trip! All painted on location. One of these was made in 14 minutes (yes, I timed it π) while everyone else was having lunch.

Hiked my painting equipment into the 10 km into beautiful Stanley Mitchell hut, and was it ever worth it! Managed to make 7 little paintings on the trip.

Four artists at a boat launch, painting beside and in a river β‘
I had the loveliest time painting alongside these women. We chatted for a little while we got settled and then swiftly moved into a flow state.

βHey look! I made a painting!β π
The sky really was that blue. Gorgeous day - warm, breezy, and no biting insects - the kind of day plein air dreams are made of.
These outdoor paintings are an important part of my practice - they help me understand how light and colour work out there on location.
Setting up for painting in the mountains!
