New Zealand’s Milford Sound, like Yosemite Valley or Sagrada Familia, exceeded my already elevated expectations. Cliffs ascend 4,000 feet straight up from the water’s surface. Waterfalls plummet downward, exploding into mist. Clouds shoot God beams through the haze. For two hours I was spellbound.

Thanks, I'm fine now. I'd like to punch any politician in the face who dares to say "The US has the best healthcare system in the world." We aren't even close.

If being unexpectedly hospitalized extends your vacation for a few days, Queenstown New Zealand is not a bad place to be. It was a sad reminder of why “medical tourism” has become so commonplace in the US. I received top-notch care for one-tenth of what it would have cost in the US.

The coastal cliffs above Milford Sound in New Zealand are among the tallest and sheerest in the world, rising 4,000 feet above the water. Waterfalls plunging from the cliffs create circular mandalas on the water's surface upon impact.

The Brighton Bathing Boxes are 93 colorful beach huts just outside of Melbourne. The huts were mostly built in the early 1900s as changing rooms, but are now use for storage and family gatherings. Limited supply has driven up prices; in late 2023 a box sold for $450,000.

Just back from our longest stint abroad since 2022. Twenty five days, two countries, four cities, two wilderness treks, seventeen thousand flight miles, one bloodied eyeball, one emergency hospitalization, and over a thousand photos taken. Here’s one, of Cape Raoul on the Tasmanian Peninsula.

Tom’s rules for protecting your camera if you fall during a hike:
1) Lift your camera straight up in the air. To avoid any damage to the camera, break your fall with your face.
2) Focus impact on your left eye, you need your right eye for the viewfinder.
