6-month update of my ice cream places dashboard has 22 new ones, including from Seattle, Austin, Dallas, Colorado Springs (🙌 Josh & John's), SoCal (🙌 Black Tap Craft shakes), & more Bay Area/adjacent spots (🙌more Ghirardelli's)! Now up to 300+🍨places, w/ some shifts in the Top 10 since July 2024.
Agree that the 2023 FSU omission was glaring and broke precedent somewhat by projecting what a team could do instead of valuing what it had done.
I think the difference the current format is you now have semis w/ 3 2-loss non-conf champs. In the past, OSU & PSU last losses would be disqualifying.
And perhaps this is fine, as the playoffs making the regular season look less meaningful happens frequently in almost every other major North American sport, and often more than this! But it's definitely different from pretty much the entire history of major college football.
The CFB Playoff champion will either have:
1) taken their 2nd loss in a big-time final game before the Playoff
2) lost to #87 at home & played only 3 Top-40 opponents (in
@espn FPI)
All 4 are "good" enough (from power standpoing), but hard to say this type of playoff doesn't devalue regular season.
I understand that, but my point was true last week as well - Alabama was ahead in SOR before SMU's loss to Clemson (basically, didn't line up then either).
And IMO if SMU can move "up" with a win in the ACC Champ Game, then they should also be able to move down with a loss - can't just be 1 side.

I'd actually advocate for this for almost every sport, if we want regular season standings/seedings to matter. It helps handle issues w/ seeding based on "best" vs "most deserving" - can use standings or resume metrics for seeding, then let better seeds handle "best" w/ their opponent selections.
On inequities like Oregon's path to semis being harder than (e.g.) Boise's, couple options:
1) remove auto byes for Top 4 conf champs
2a) reseed after 1st round (NFL style)
OR, even better:
2b) allow better seeds to pick opponents after 1st round.
This would increases benefit to having better seeds
On CFP committee selections: we've had SOR (& similar metrics) for 10+ years now. There are established, analytically sound ways to balance W-L vs SOS, so you know if it's harder to go 9-3 vs Alabama's schedule than 11-2 vs SMU's (answer: Bama). Should be discussed more (& committee could use, too).
Happy to have reached 8 years at Google! 8 is my favorite #, and this means I've been here longer than I was at ESPN (full-time) - did not expect that!

-Kansas: FPI #36, SOR #102(!)
-BYU: FPI #28, SOR #4
KU won at BYU today (after W vs #17 Iowa St last week). Another good reminder of the diff btw "best" & "most deserving"!
