Cubs announce that they have signed OF Dylan Carlson to a Minor League deal with a non-roster invite to MLB camp this spring.
Cubs announce theyβve signed outfielder Dylan Carlson to a minor-league deal with an invite to big-league camp.
The switch-hitting Carlson, 27, appeared in 83 games for Orioles last year and posted a .203/.278/.336 slash line and 73 OPS+. A former first-round pick of STL, he can play all 3 OF spots
Projections are more useful than last year's numbers, but here are the average 2025 ERA, xERA, FIP, and xFIP of the four relievers the Cubs have signed to MLB deals this offseason, weighted by total batters faced:
ERA: 3.11
xERA: 3.09
FIP: 3.35
xFIP: 3.83
The deadline is next week to add prospects to the 40-man roster, thus protecting them from the Rule 5 Draft.
Find out who @ivyfutures.bsky.social and I think they might protect!

Can we get a Friday, August 28th, 2026 Kyle Hendricks day at Wrigley Field?
The 28 is a nod to his number and the Cubs are scheduled to play the Reds, which is the team that Kyle faced in his MLB Debut and final start as a Cub.

The season didnβt end how youβd hope, but the Cubs fought this year. Battled injuries, won 92 wins and a playoff series, was down 0-2 and forced a Game 5, won 4/5 playoff games at Wrigley.
Now they head to the winter and the plan will be to build another winner to go further.
the fact that baseball media has to keep pushing a GFM for an Angels prospect's brain injury expenses says more about the Angels organization than anything I could possibly ever say myself
I think the Club option is powerful and far better from a risk/reward profile than just buying out an additional arb year. Plus thereβs a lot of incentive for Horton to get to FA earlier. Free agency at 31 is much better than 32
Cade Horton might have the perfect risk/reward projection for the Cubs and Horton/his agency to come together on an extension after this season.
Cubs lock in $54m and Horton earns lifetime security while still having opportunity to enter free agency at 30/31.
Heβs great! His football playing plans could impact that decision

Happy MLB Draft Day to all those who celebrate.
I no longer scout it. I barely even know any names this year. I only watched some quick highlights on a half dozen players I've seen connected to Cubs.
So, I can't help you with any analysis this year.
Please turn to @ivyfutures.bsky.social for that.
Officially MLB Draft day and there are mocks to discuss. Ten Sixty West discord and The Baseball Tribune subscribers had access earlier. First, here is my 2025 full MLB Mock Draft 3.0.
32 selections, historical drafting tendencies, and chatter. Dive in!

I hear ya but I actually donβt think the steps to fix Sandy arenβt that crazy
Heβs fixable
Oh yeah thereβs definitely work to be done, but heβs much closer to ready than a guy who canβt stick in the rotation
I think weβd all have said the same about Mackenzie Gore, Zack Wheeler, and Tarik Skubal as well FWIW
Respectfully, I have watched Cade Horton since before he was drafted and I couldnβt disagree more
Horton has definitely looked inconsistent but last nights start felt unfairly magnified by other factors.
But every team needs it so I wouldnβt count on teams being able to add two starters.
Adding an arm they believe could start a playoff game pushing Cade Horton down to be their 5? I think a whole of teams would jump at that.
Iβd be surprised if they got two SP. Maybe that happens, but itβs a big ask. One very good starter goes a long way
Iβd trust Craig Counsell on how he wants to develop Cade Horton. If it keeps looking like last night then of course thatβs not viable for a team in contention, but one start where he couldnβt keep his team in the game against a premium opponent is a learning moment, not a referendum.
Not sure itβs the best fit positional, but Rob Refsnyder would be a great lefty masher if the Red Sox ended up selling. Heβs hit lefties like Suzuki and Tucker over the last two years.
Received some good questions for tomorrowβs pod. But still room for more. Drop any MLB Draft questions in the replies!
Itβs NCAA Regionals day for all those that celebrate so itβs time for another MLB Mock Draft.
Drop your questions below and Iβll work to answer them in an upcoming podcast episode.
