A bity of a show at Thurso golf club just as the moon was rising.
A multicoloured butterfly featuring a green stripe on wings. Light blue botches. A red breast, and yellow edging on bottom wing. Y This gorgeous creature is a Richmond birdwing, a butterfly native to the rainforests of north-east NSW and south-east Queensland that can grow pretty large with a wingspan of up to 14cm. This little fellow was spotted by an eagle-eyed ranger in Border Ranges National Park. Just look at those bright colourings Sadly, its population has significantly declined over the last few decades due to habitat loss and incursions of invasive plant species like the toxic Dutchmans Pipe Vine. You can help these big little flyers make a comeback! If you live in north-east NSW you can plant a Birdwing vine in your backyard - it's the Richmond birdwing's only food source and critically important to their survival.
