Statement from Michael and Susan Pretti Parents of Alex Jeffrey Pretti โWe are heartbroken but also very angry. Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately, he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the โheroโ term lightly. However, his last thought and act was to protect a woman. The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trumpโs murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He had his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down, all while being pepper sprayed. Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you.

Kids in my daughterโs school refer to those two days off as Evil Break.

๐จHOLY CRAP. An ICE whistleblower just revealed a secret memo authorizing ICE officers to break into homes without a judicial warrant, which DHS's own legal training materials say is unconstitutional!
ICE then hid the memo from the public, passing it along by word of mouth and private conversation.
๐จWHOA. The El Paso Medical Examiner says it will rule the death of a 55-year-old Cuban man at ICE's "Camp East Montana" tent camp as a homicide.
He was allegedly choked to death by a guard during a "struggle" after he refused to enter a housing unit without his medications.

An agent of the state murders an American, and government leaders rush to media to call the victim a "domestic terrorist" before any pretense of an investigation. We are so far down the fascist hole.

I'm updating my forced migration syllabus to reflect the hellscape that is the current US. But the scene beside me is helping me through. The two on the right, Sage (tiny puppy) and Dallas (gentle senior giant), are available for adoption in Missouri through People Helping Paws Rescue.

Real-time in a class of 20 students because I didn't know they didn't know it until they were working on a practice exercise and couldn't get code to run because they didn't understand that the data file and the code file needed to be in the same file pathway.
I have literally taught how to create a file folder on one's computer in order to save files into something other than the generic Downloads folder in a class session that was supposed to be a review of coding in R for data management. This was new to 21-year olds. They genuinely weren't taught.
The computer skills I see in even my 3rd year college students are frighteningly poor. The fact that systems are moving to the cloud doesn't remove the need for some of the skills that K-12 schools are very clearly no longer teaching. Assuming digital nativity is a huge disservice to these students.
