Most people now have seen the famous IBM quote saying "a computer can never be held accountable, therefore a computer must never make a management decision".

21st century execs updated that to, a computer can never be held accountable...and that's a good thing!

I think I can summarise all that as "you've had it too good for too long, peasants."

It's a straw man; when your opponent's position is unassailable you concoct an argument they never made and attack that instead.

Absolutely

Something along the lines of the Greens' policies sounding good but they're not up front about the costs, as if the main parties aren't 1000x worse for this

Oh, but they'll always keep doing this, won't they

Like when chinstrokers ask "can we afford net zero?" begging the question that doing nothing about climate change is cost free

Yeah, this is not so different to Tory MPs defecting to Reform. They are part of the reason their voters left the party.

Who has dismissed the socially conservative streak of the movement, when did that happen?

If it were really a third rail, politicians would be too afraid to touch it. Instead, they can't seem to stop fucking with it.

Actually tbh I may have just besmirched accountants unjustly

I think we decided it was inefficient to hold lots of reserve, which is exactly the kind of thing an accountant would think

You can see it in how many of them are fans of Iain M Banks' Culture stories while somehow failing to see that each and every one of them would be a bad guy in one of his novels.

The unintended negative consequences of the β€˜war on drugs’ - Penal Reform International This briefing discusses the negative consequences of the 50 year 'war on drugs' and sets out what parliamentarians can do about it.

Does this help?

Okay, that is interesting then.

I think people who say that were brought up on 1990s sci fi and similar where a lot of plot lines concerned soldiers following their conscience and disobeying illegal or immoral orders.

In the real world, militaries in western countries are really *very* keen on people following orders.

If I see a monstrous character as cool, does that not say more about me than the work?

It is, after all, the paper for those who find the Telegraph too moderate.

And, ironically, if anyone should have their smartphones confiscated and be banned from the internet, it's the political and media class.

Strange thing that though, because I use WhatsApp and none of my messages have ever disappeared, none of my friends have said this either
