I’ve experienced this at 2 different schools and culture matters more than structure alone. If a principal is rarely in school, not contributing as an equal member of the community, then this is just an efficient form of burning teachers out. But at schools with principals who are truly in it, great

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Alberto Castañeda Mondragón says his memory was so jumbled after a beating by immigration officers that he initially could not remember he had a daughter and still struggles to recall treasured moments like the night he taught her to dance. But the violence he endured last month in Minnesota while being detained is seared into his battered brain. He remembers Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulling him from a friend’s car on Jan. 8 outside a St. Paul shopping center and throwing him to the ground, handcuffing him, then punching him and striking his head with a steel baton. He remembers being dragged into an SUV and taken to a detention facility, where he said he was beaten again. He also remembers the emergency room and the intense pain from eight skull fractures and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages.
ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.”
What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.

Seeing all these feckless Democrats in Congress flailing and asking "what do you want me to do" and I keep thinking: bare minimum, I want you to have the energy of a 76-year-old John Lewis staging a sit-in on the floor of Congress in opposition to the inaction on gun violence after Pulse. MINIMUM.
We are descending as a society into a dark sea of false and dehumanizing representations of immigrants, as deep in wickedness and lies as it is replete with monsters of our own making. Too many of us would rather drown than swim to the surface and back to the shores of sanity.
In early 2024, we pledged to tell accountability stories with partners in all 50 states over the next five years — our 50 State Initiative. We’re currently working with our first 10 local newsrooms and will be selecting another 10 in 2025.

As a new ESL teacher, I taught with 10 veterans. Sadly they weren’t helpful. Then I joined 🐦 and found you! Not only did I feel I’d found a mentor—you set an example as a teacher who is always ready to share for the benefit of the kids. I’ve tried to do the same. Thank you(Back then I was Ms Flecha)
I already have students with deportation orders, filing for special juvenile asylum, etc. While trying not to panic, my colleagues and I are trying to prepare for the not-unimaginable worst coming. I don’t believe we’re alone in our worries/desire to plan. Are your schools/colleagues discussing?

I’ve been teaching since 2007 but never teach the same texts or with the same purpose. Always depends on the kids’ interests or needs. It’s usually invigorating but this year it’s SO exhausting since I’m also creating new routines because I have more SLIFE students
Not only that. I’m currently writing a chapter that describes the ways that, since the 1970s, immigration authorities have done everything they can to DISCOURAGE asking for asylum at ports of entry.
Reason a million our asylum system doesn’t work that has little to do with fraudulent claims.
