I’ve experienced this at 2 different schools and culture matters more than structure alone. If a principal is rarely in school, not contributing as an equal member of the community, then this is just an efficient form of burning teachers out. But at schools with principals who are truly in it, great

It’s not the genre you may be looking for, but the short story β€œCatch, Pull, Drive” in the Fresh Ink anthology is helpful for developing empathy by reading from a trans teen’s point of view

Opinion | This Is Just Who Trump Is

"For years, a cottage industry of political observers has contorted itself to obscure and occlude the obvious. That regardless of what others see in him, Trump’s entire political career...cannot be understood outside the context of his bitter, deep-seated racism." (gift link)

I didn't know how much I needed this show until I saw it. I'm going to have my youngest nephew watch it with me today.

Stephen Miller Says Might Makes Right In US Takeover: β€˜They Cannot Defend Greenland’ The White House deputy chief of staff argued that America has a right to Greenland because "tiny" Denmark can't defend its territory against U.S. military force.

I keep coming back to Miller's formulation of sovereignty: "to control a territory you have to be able to defend a territory, improve a territory, inhabit a territory."

Think of how few states actually meet that definition, and how alarmed the rest will be to learn this is the US govt's position.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β€” Alberto CastaΓ±eda MondragΓ³n says his memory was so jumbled after a beating by immigration officers that he initially could not remember he had a daughter and still struggles to recall treasured moments like the night he taught her to dance.

But the violence he endured last month in Minnesota while being detained is seared into his battered brain.

He remembers Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulling him from a friend’s car on Jan. 8 outside a St. Paul shopping center and throwing him to the ground, handcuffing him, then punching him and striking his head with a steel baton. He remembers being dragged into an SUV and taken to a detention facility, where he said he was beaten again.

He also remembers the emergency room and the intense pain from eight skull fractures and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages.

ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man β€œpurposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.”

What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.

Viola Fletcher, Oldest Survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre, Dies at 111

As a survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre, Viola Ford Fletcher bravely shared her story so that we’d never forget this painful part of our history. Michelle and I are grateful for her lifelong work to advance civil rights, and send our love to her family.

Analysis: As Trump launches his enforcement offensive, immigrant advocates are mobilizing too | CNN Politics Far beyond the Washington clamor of executive actions and lawsuits, and the dueling press releases between Donald Trump allies and adversaries, the arrival of the new president’s immigration regime is...

As communities come together to take action, protect people's rights, and share critical resources, there's one thing we need to remember: this country was forged by people who were willing to resist.

John Lewis staging a sit-in on the floor of Congress in 2016 in an effort to combat gun violence.

Seeing all these feckless Democrats in Congress flailing and asking "what do you want me to do" and I keep thinking: bare minimum, I want you to have the energy of a 76-year-old John Lewis staging a sit-in on the floor of Congress in opposition to the inaction on gun violence after Pulse. MINIMUM.

We are descending as a society into a dark sea of false and dehumanizing representations of immigrants, as deep in wickedness and lies as it is replete with monsters of our own making. Too many of us would rather drown than swim to the surface and back to the shores of sanity.

Changing Laws and Changing Lives: Why ProPublica Is Dedicated to Local Investigations Managing Editor Charles Ornstein explains the many ways ProPublica is trying to help fill the void left by local newsrooms shrinking and closing across the country.

In early 2024, we pledged to tell accountability stories with partners in all 50 states over the next five years β€” our 50 State Initiative. We’re currently working with our first 10 local newsrooms and will be selecting another 10 in 2025.

Agreed! I mean there will be public info that can be /is getting shared through networks already doing the work, like immigration lawyers and advocates. I’m wondering how teachersβ€”who are often the first person kids ask for helpβ€”can connect to that to be more informed and prepare

I already have students with deportation orders, filing for special juvenile asylum, etc. While trying not to panic, my colleagues and I are trying to prepare for the not-unimaginable worst coming. I don’t believe we’re alone in our worries/desire to plan. Are your schools/colleagues discussing?

I’ve been teaching since 2007 but never teach the same texts or with the same purpose. Always depends on the kids’ interests or needs. It’s usually invigorating but this year it’s SO exhausting since I’m also creating new routines because I have more SLIFE students

Not only that. I’m currently writing a chapter that describes the ways that, since the 1970s, immigration authorities have done everything they can to DISCOURAGE asking for asylum at ports of entry.
Reason a million our asylum system doesn’t work that has little to do with fraudulent claims.
